Local roundup: Top seeds all advance after first day of wrestling tourney

Smyrna High’s Gabe Giampietro started his bid for a fourth state title with a pair of first-period pins on Friday night.

All 14 top seeds advanced through the quarterfinals as the DIAA Individual Wrestling State Tournament got underway on Friday night at Cape Henlopen.

The tournament concludes on Saturday with the semifinals at 11 a.m. and the finals scheduled for 7 p.m.

Giampietro, a senior 120-pounder, and Caravel’s Alex Poore at 160 are trying to become only the 11th and 12th wrestlers in Delaware history to win four state titles. Poore started out with a tech fall and pin on Friday.

In the team standings, Caravel leads with 101.5 points, followed by Cape Henlopen (86.5) and Caesar Rodney (75). Caravel advanced nine wrestlers to the semifinals, Cape advanced eight and CR advanced five.

Besides Giempietro, the other top seeds from the Henlopen Conference to make it to the semifinals were Cape Henlopen’s Mikey Frederick (145) and Dalton Deevey (220); Sussex Central’s Malachi Stratton (106) and Josh Negron (182); Milford’s Jack Thode (132), Lake Forest’s Nurrideen Ahmad-Statts (152) and Indian River’s T.J. Burke (285).

Thode is trying to win his third state championship.

Swimming

Henlopen girls reach finals: Six Henlopen Conference swimmers qualified for the DIAA girls’ state finals at the preliminaries on Thursday night.

The state finals are scheduled for Saturday at the University of Delaware, with the boys’ meet slated for 11 a.m. and the girls’ meet at 6 p.m.

Sussex Academy’s Gracie Maughan will be in three state finals after qualifying third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.09), fifth in the 200-yard IM (2:12.38) and swimming a leg on the Seahawks’ fifth-place 200-yard medley relay team (1:53.45). Joining her in the relay are Victoria Evans, Sanne Elling and Elle McKay.

Caesar Rodney’s Victoria May made a pair of state finals after qualifying fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:16.71) and seventh in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.82) while Sussex Central’s Madelynn McTeer qualified fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (53.98) and seventh in the 50-yard freestyle (24.68).

College basketball

WOMEN, Delaware 65, Elon 61: The Blue Hens shook off an early five-point deficit to take a four-point halftime lead and then held off the Phoenix to snap Elon’s five-game winning streak.

Jasmine Dickey led all scorers with 25 points and 11 rebounds to post her 13th double-double on the season for Delaware (13-2 CAA, 19-6 overall). Lizzie Oleary followed with 15 points while Tyi Battle added 11 points and 10 rebounds to register her 17th double-double on the season.

College baseball

Delaware 8, Florida Atlantic 5: The Blue Hens opened up an 8-1 lead with three runs in the fifth before notching the road win.

Joey Lloynd went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a homer, two RBI and two runs for Delaware. John Weglarz also homered and drove in two runs for the Hens.

Charleston 12, Delaware State 5: Miguel Rivera (Polytech) and Alec Rodriguez (Dover) led the Hornets with two hits apiece as DSU dropped its season opener.

Rivera also recorded an RBI-double in the top of the fourth that scored Alan Alonso to get Delaware State on the board. Also for th Hornets, Trey Paige hit a three-run homerun.

College softball

Hens split two at N.C. State: Delaware exploded for 17 runs in the nightcap to salvage a split of the opening day of the N.C. State Invitational.

The Blue Hens dropped the opener to Bowling Green 6-5 before coming back in a big way for a 17-3 victory over Central Connecticut State.

In the nightcap, Delaware (6-5) sending 15 batters to the plate and scoring 12 runs in the top of the fifth inning while scoring the most runs since the 2021 season opener.

Grace Hrustich went 3-for-4 and finished a triple shy of the cycle while Hanna Garber had a double and a home run while driving in five runs. Julz Garber also had two hits and scored three runs.

DSU drops two: The Delaware State softball team fell to Louisiana Monroe, 3-1, and Bradley, 9-1, on the opening day of the Plainsman Invitational at Auburn.

In the opener, Delaware State starting pitcher Sydney Hoffman allowed just five hits, but the Hornets were held to three in the contest. The had only one hit against Bradley.

College bowling

Hornets selected for USBC event: The Delaware State bowling team was selected to compete in the Intercollegiate Team Championships as announced by the United States Bowling Congress.

The USBC assigned Delaware State to the 16-team Dayton, Ohio sectional, the same sectional that the Hornets competed in a year ago.

College golf

DSU’s Ferryra Heit ties for 10th: Delaware State’s Ana Ferryra Heit tied for 10th overal at the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islander Women’s Golf Classic in San Antonio this week.

Ferryra Heit carded a three-day total of 222, highlighted by a final round score of 72. She recorded a total of 25 birdies in the tournament to tie for fifth in the field.

Delaware State was ninth overall in the field of 18 teams.
