Smyrna High’s Gabe Giempetro won his first three matches as the Beast of the East wrestling tournament got underway at the Carpenter Center in Newark on Saturday.
Seeded No. 2 at 120 pounds, Giampietro will start his day in the championship quarterfinals today. The tourney concludes with the quarterfinals at 8:30 a.m., the semifinals at 11:30 and the finals at 3:15 p.m.
Cape Henlopen’s Carson Kammerer (170) and Dalton Deevey (220) are also in the quarterfinals in Newark.
A senior who finished fourth in the Beast two years ago, Giampietro won by tech fall, pin and major decision in his first three matches. He’s slated to face seventh-seeded Colin Kacena of Bolingbrook, Illinois in the quarterfinals.
In a bracket where only three of the top-10 seeds remain, the 24th-seeded Kammerer beat No. 17 (decision) and No. 64 (major decision) in his two matches on Saturday. Kammerer will take on No. 12 Daniel Williams of Lake Highland Prep in the quarterfinals.
Deevey, seeded eighth at 220, started out with a bye, a pin and a 3-2 decision. The senior is slated to take on fourth-seeded Parker Farrell of Christiansburg, Virginia.
Also among Delaware wrestlers, Caravel’s Luke and Alex Poore both advanced to the quarterfinals. Seeded No. 3 at 126, Luke Poore started out with a bye, a pin and a decision in his first three matches.
Seeded No. 3 at 160, Alex Poore opened with two pins and a decision.
Central wins Delmar title: Sussex Central won the team title at the Delmar Invitational on Saturday.
The top three finishers in the 13-team tournament were from the Henlopen Conference: Sussex Central (326 points), second-place Lake Forest (233.5) and third-place Indian River (177).
Individually, the Golden Knights’ champions were Malachi Stratton (106 pounds), Chase Murray (113), Evan Cordrey (120), Evan Broomall (132), Caden Cope (152) and Josh Negron (182).
Lake Forest got individual titles from Case Dempsey (126), Cael Moyer (138), Abdullah Ahmad-Statts (145) and Cole Dempsey (160). Also from the Henlopen Conference, Indian River’s T.J. Burke won the 285-pound crown.
Blue Jays take second: Seaford placed second in the Parkside Holiday Tournament.
Parkside won the team title with 386 points with the Blue Jays totaling 280. Seaford’s individual champions were Sean Martinez (152) and. Zachary Holmes (160),
The only other individual champions from the Henlopen Conference were Delmar’s Dustin Elliott (138) and Kane Johnson (170).
Boys’ basketball
Delmarva Christian 70, Sussex Central 53: The Royals led by only two before outscoring the Golden Knights, 25-10, in the fourth quarter to close out the nonconference win on Saturday.
Dontarius Jones (23 points), Gabe Herling (21) and Loubens Fleurima (15) paced Delmarva Christian. Herling sank five of the Royals’ seven three-pointers.
St. Georges 61, Milford 28: The Hawks led by only four before outscoring the Buccaneers by a combined 39-12 in the second and third quarters.
College football
Hens sign one more recruit: The University of Delaware added one more high school recruit to its signing list with the addition of cornerback Shuyab “Shoes” Brinkley.
A Philadelphia native who played at California’s Mater Dei High this fall, Brinkley had verbally committed to the Blue Hens previously but didn’t make it official until Friday. He reportedly had a number of college offers, including some from the FBS level.
College basketball
MEN, North Carolina Central 86, Delaware State 53: North Carolina Central took advantage of Delaware State’s 11th hour call to serve as a fill-in at the HBCU Legacy Classic with a wire-to-wire victory in the star-studded event at Prudential Arena on Saturday
DSU accepted an invitation on Friday to replace Hampton in the four-team event, whose backers include tennis great Serena Williams and actor Michael B. Jordan. Hampton was forced to opt out of the event due to COVID protocols.
The HBCU Legacy doubleheader, which featured Howard and North Carolina A&T in the second game, was televised live on TNT and broadcast by network personalities Grant Hill, along with Stephanie Ready.
Myles Carter was high scorer for Delaware State (2-8) with 18 points, while Dominik Fragala added 12.
John Stansbury, making his season debut, scored six points and shared the team lead with five rebounds for the Hornets. Chris Sodom also grabbed five rebounds for DSU.
“Despite the outcome, we’re extremely grateful for the experience of competing in the HBCU Legacy Classic,” said Delaware State first-year coach Stan Waterman. “It’s an honor to represent Delaware State and HBCUs on such a grand scale. This event brings a great deal of attention to the history and outstanding service of our institutions, and it’s a privilege for us to share in the experience.”
WOMEN, Lehigh 82, Delaware State 39: The Hornets (0-9) tied the game three times in the first quarter before the Mountain Hawks took control.
Freshman guard Sianny Sanchez-Oliver led Delaware State with 10 points. Senior Janasia Law chipped in with nine points and a team-best three assists.
