Sussex Tech freshman Sierra Troyer, the game’s leading scorer with 17 points, takes off down the court on a fast break. Delaware State News/Ben Heck[/caption] The Sussex Tech High girls’ basketball squad held off Urbana High (Md.) Saturday night, defeating the Hawks 44-36 at University of Maryland Eastern Shore to take home its bracket championship at the 38th annual Governor’s Challenge.
Freshman guard Sierra Troyer led the scoring for the Ravens, putting up a game-high 17 points and reeling in eight rebounds. Senior Nikki Phillips recorded four points and eight rebounds.
Ravens senior point guard Airelle Parker goes up for a layup.The Ravens (5-2) turned the ball over 18 times and shot just 26% from the floor, including 22% in the first half, but used late free throws from Troyer and forward Janiya Stevens to escape with the eight-point win.
Sussex Tech defeated James M. Bennett (Md.) Friday morning, 47-35, to set up the bracket title game with the Hawks.
Boys’ basketball
Sussex Tech 61, Walt Whitman 59: Devon Reynolds made a three with 30 seconds to go and the Ravens held on for a win at the Governor’s Challenge.
Sussex Tech won the Bracket 10 championship with the victory.
Women’s basketball
Marshall 75, Delaware State 63: The Hornets suffered the road loss and dropped to 2-8 on the season.
NaJai Pollard led DSU with 30 points (including a season high three made three-pointers), 14 rebounds, four blocks, two assists, and one steal.
Keke Barber added 10 points (including 3 three-pointers), three rebounds, two steals, one assist, and one block.
Lanayjha Ashe and Shonnyvelle Regalado totaled 18 points and seven assists.
Catholic 67, Wesley 37: The Wolverines fell in the opening round of the Jamie Lynn Roberts Tourna-ment presented by Fairfield Inn & Suites.
Monshea Newsome-Murray paced the Wesley offense with 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting. New-some-Murray added five assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Shelby Johnson was a point away from a double-double, pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds and nine points.
SherVohnia Tolson chipped in with six points while Lekeshia Brown-Myrick and Sydney Peder-sen tallied four and three points respectively.
