Local roundup: Sussex Central pulls out North wrestling win over Cape Henlopen

Sussex Central High won the last three individual matches to pull out a 36-30 win over Cape Henlopen in their Henlopen North wrestling showdown on Wednesday night.

Trailing 30-24, the Golden Knights got a pin from Malachi Stratton (113 pounds), a 7-2 decision from Chase Murray (120) and then a clinching 6-2 decision from Evan Cordrey (126) in the final bout.

The victory leaves Central at 4-0 in the North, 15-0 overall while the Vikings fell to 5-1 in the North, 12-4 overall. It’s the eighth time in the last nine meetings that the Knights have beaten the Vikings.

Wednesday’s matchup, which was tied three times, was close throughout. Cape Henlopen took its last lead at 30-24 on a first-period pin from Tripp Gannon (106).

Sussex Central got a seven-second pin from Ryder Robinson (215) and a 32-second fall from Cody Layfield (157). The Knights also got a pin from Ivan Neal (190).

The Vikings answered with pins from Joshua Wright (138), Luke Bender (165) and Sean Costello (285).

Lake Forest 54, Woodbridge 24: The Spartans collected three pins in earning the South victory.

Winning by fall for Lake Forest were Jerusalem Howard (132), Coen Dempsey (150) and Clay Rosebrooks (190). The Spartans also won five matches by forfeit.

The Blue Raiders got pins from Ryan Buckler (106), Parker Short (120), Quincy Risper (175) and Khelei Tillman (285).

Milford 54, Sussex Tech 22: Alexander Starkey (113), Hunter Durham (132), Jordan Curry (190) and Josue Villarreal Gomez (285) all registered pins in under a minute for the Buccaneers.

Milford also got pins from Nathan Hague (157), Oliver Barnes (165) and Greg Lockett (215).

Smyrna 78, Dover 6: Qwantez Watkins (126) picked up a 38-second pin while Kael Howell (190) added a fall in 54 seconds to spark the Eagles in the North win.

Also winning by pin for Smyrna were Ian Alfree (106), Warren Coates (113), Kyle Davis (138), Tyree Heath (144), Jesse Dixon (150), Jacob Supinski (157), Teagan Gratkowski (175), Christopher Kearney (215) and Chijioke Eule (285).

Silas Sheranko (132) had a three-minute pin for the Senators’ lone win.

Laurel 45, Indian River 24: The Bulldogs collected five pins before staying unbeaten in the South.

Laurel got pins from Ian Messick (113), Xavier Limehouse (150), Mike Gonzalez (190), Brayden Hearn (215) and Joseph Baynard (285).

The Indians answered with pins from Kyree Knight (132), Angel Mora Salas (144) and Jayvion Chandler (165).

Girls’ basketball

Early College 61, Laurel 40: The Hornets started the game on a 12-1 run before picking up the South victory.

At 7-2 in the South, 9-2 overall, Early College set a school record for wins in a season.

Sophomore Zuri Matthews netted 21 points for Early College with freshman Marshay Brown adding 10.

The Buldogs got 12 points from Bailey Ullman and 10 from Carlie Venables.

Delmarva Christian 65, Gunston 21: The Royals improved to 11-0 with the win.

Ainsley Bell (21 points 12 rebounds, 6 steals) and Journey Handy (20 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists) paced Delmarva Christian. Bell hit 10-of-11 shots from the field.

Boys’ basketball

Laurel 67, Early College 48: The Bulldogs led 44-22 by halftime before improing to 10-3 overall.

Kylse Wilson had 13 points with Corey Mumford adding 11 as 10 Laurel players scored in the contest.

Milford 64, Sussex Central 58: The Buccaneers snapped the Golden Knights’ five-game winning streak on Tuesday.

Cape Henlopen 59, Sussex Tech 37: The Vikings improved to 9-4 overall with the North victory.
