Local roundup: Smyrna wraps up Henlopen North volleyball title

Smyrna High clinched the Henlopen North title with a 3-0 victory over Dover in girls’ volleyball on Thursday evening.

The Eagles improved to 5-0 in the North, 12-1 overall with the 25-11, 25-19, 25-17 win over the Senators.

Anna Richardson (11 kills), Karolyn Osborne (4 kills, 3 aces, 18 assists) and Elise Carter (7 kills) paced Smyrna.

Leading Dover were Kenyatta Williams (8 kills), Reese Culver (10 digs) and Jasmine Hallum (22 assists).

The Henlopen Conference championship match is scheduled for Oct. 29 at Woodbridge at noon.

Caesar Rodney 3, Cape Henlopen 0: The Riders won the Henlopen North match by scores of 27-25, 25-13, 30-28.

Alexandra Mardesich led CR with 19 kills and 15 digs with Melissa Eddy (9 kills, 2 aces, 13 digs), Reagan White (8 kills), Claire Husemann (2 kills, 8 digs, 16 assists) and Alyssa Diem (19 assists) also leading the way.

Leading Cape Henlopen were Tatum Friend (12 kills, 5 blocks), Kalista Lawson (7 kills, 4 aces, 11 digs), Harlee Graulich (20 digs) and Megan Smith (28 assists).

Sussex Central 3, Milford 1: The Golden Knights shook off a first-set loss to register the 15-25, 25-14, 25-13, 25-13 Henlopen North win.

Takyla Davis had eight kills and six aces for Central with Ava Albano adding three aces and 10 assists.

Delmar 3, Lake Forest 2: The Wildcats edged the Spartans in a five-set Henlopen South match.

Delmarva Christian 3, Red Lion 0: The Royals raised their record to 12-1 with the 25-20, 27-25, 25-15 victory.

Hodgson 3, Woodbridge 0: The Silver Eagles downed the Blue Raiders in a non-conference match.

Field hockey

Lake Forest 6, Dover 1: Malory Wood tallied three goals to pace the Spartans.
Emma Massey added a goal and two assists while Madison Lawson made five saves. Lake Forest out-shot the Senators, 20-9.

Dover’s Savanna Wise made nine saves.

Delmar 6, Smyrna 0: Jordyn Hollamon (1 save) and Maci Bradford both scored twice as the undefeated Wildcats won the Henlopen showdown.

Josie Hollamon added a goal and three assists for Delmar, which posted advantages of 14-3 in shots and 15-4 in corners.

Halle Geiger had six saves for the Eagles.

Indian River 2, Polytech 1: Kinsley Hall’s second-half goal broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Indians the win. Jillian Collins scored in the first half for IR.

Kylee LaVere scored for the Panthers, who finished with advantages of 9-3 in shots. Both had squads had four corners.

Cape Henlopen 6, Woodbridge 0: Grace Wiggins tallied three goals and an assist to pace the Vikings, who held advantages of 19-3 in shots and 11-3 in corners.

Abigail Tatman made four saves for the Blue Raiders.

Milford 6, Laurel 0: Julianne Dickerson tallied the Buccaneers’ last two goals in the win.

Carley Mackert had two assists as five players scored for Milford. The Bucs held edges of 31-1 in shots and 13-2 in corners.

Taylor Rawlings had 22 saves for the Bulldogs.

Sussex Academy 2, Sussex Tech 1: The Seahawks’ second-half goal broke a 1-1 tie.

Boys’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 4, Delmar 1: Thad Glasser (1 assist) netted a pair of second-half goals to cap off the Riders’ victory.

Trevor Sullivan and Derek Hawkins also scored for CR, which held advantages of 14-5 in shots and 8-1 in corner kicks.

Darwin Lopez-Ponce scored for the Wildcats.

Cape Henlopen 7, Lake Forest 0: Nicholas Panyko netted four goals and an assist for the Vikings, who led only 1-0 at halftime.

Cape Henlopen out-shot the Spartans, 16-0, and held a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.

Milford 3, Laurel 2: Thompson Burke scored twice as the Buccaneers edged the Bulldogs.

Emmanuel Joseph also scored for Milford, which out-shot the Bulldogs, 12-6.
Diego Berduo-Guterrez and Jose Zelaya Mejia accounted for Laurel’s goals.

Sussex Central 2, Sussex Academy 0: Jeyson Roblero Lopez scored a goal in each half to pace the Golden Knights’ victory.

Justin Glasco made five saves for Central, which finished with advantages of 16-6 in shots and 5-2 in corner kicks.

The Seahawks’ Carter Norton made 14 saves.

Seaford 6, Mt. Pleasant 2: The Blue Jays improved to 3-8 with the victory on Wednesday.

College football

Hens’ Henderson, Buchanan named to award lists: Delaware football players Nolan Henderson and Johnny Buchanan have both been named to watch lists for major FCS awards.

Henderson was added to the Walter Payton Award Watch List, which goes to the country’s best offensive player at the FCS level. The Smyrna High grad’s 18 touchdown passes not only lead the CAA, but also rank fifth nationally.

Buchanan, a linebacker, has been added to the watch list for the Buck Buchanan Award, which goes to the best FCS defensive player in the country.

He joins teammate Kedrick Whitehead who was named to the watch list prior to the start of the season.

Buchanan leads in FCS in tackles with 13 per game.

College basketball

UD women picked sixth in poll: The Delaware women’s basketball team, which won the CAA title a year ago, was picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll announced on Thursday.

Delaware has a new head coach in Sarah Jenkins as well as a number of new players on its roster. Drexel was named the league’s preseason favorite.

The Blue Hens open the season on Nov. 7 at Longwood.
