Local roundup: Smyrna rolls to North hockey win; CR wins in boys' soccer and volleyball

Smyrna High tallied three third-quarter goals to break open a 7-0 victory over Polytech in the Henlopen North field hockey opener for both squads on Thursday afternoon.

Junior Dru Moffett collected three goals and an assist for the Eagles (3-0) while senior London Bebout and freshman Bree Moffett both scored twice. Kirsten Johnson assisted on four of the goals as Smyrna finished with advantages of 17-0 in shots and 14-2 in corners.

The Eagles are coming off a 14-3 season in which they reached the DIAA Division I state finals for the first time a year ago. One of those three losses was a 2-1 setback to the Panthers.

Jourdyn Johnson made nine saves for Polytech (2-2).

Lake Forest 3, Caravel 2: Malory Wood’s goal with 5:53 remaining gave the Spartans (3-0) their third win in a row.

Maya Jester’s goal tied the contest with 8:25 left. Carmella Gannon also scored for Lake Forest, which held advantages of 12-9 in shots and 11-3 in corners. Madison Lawson made seven saves.

Milford 1, Caesar Rodney 0: Carley Mackert’s third-quarter goal lifted the Buccaneers (2-1) to the Henlopen North win.

Melissa Mesidor made five saves for Milford, which held edges of 16-5 in shots and 10-5 in penalty corners.

The Riders’ Bailey Minear made 15 saves.

Delmar 10, Laurel 0: Eight different players scored goals for the Wildcats in their Henlopen South opener.

Laela Brown scored Delmar’s first two goals with Jordyn Hollamon (1 assist) adding the last two. The Wildcats took 38 shots and had 25 corners.

Taylor Rawlings and Jillian Hardwood combined to make 20 saves for the Bulldogs.

Sussex Central 2, Dover 1: The Golden Knights edged the Senators in a Henlopen North matchup.

Indian River 11, Seaford 1: The Indians improved to 2-1 after picking up the Henlopen South victory.

Volleyball

Caesar Rodney 3, Dover 1: The Riders won the final two sets to take a 25-23, 20-25, 25-17, 25-11 Henlopen North victory.

Cape Henlopen 3, Sussex Tech 0: The Vikings registered a 25-6, 25-11, 25-16 win in the Henlopen North match.

Cape Henlopen was paced by Megan Smith (2 kills, 10 aces, 21 assists) and Harlee Graulich (13 digs).

Smyrna 3, Milford 0: The Eagles earned a Henlopn North win by scores of 25-15, 25-9, 25-9 as they improved to 3-0.

Indian River 3, Lake Forest 0: The Indians registered the Henlopen South win by scores of 25-12, 25-17, 25-9.

Boys’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 2, Milford 0: Thad Glasser tallied a goal in each half to give the Riders the Henlopen North victory.

Jacoby Sheaffer made five saves in CR’s second straight shutout. The Riders held advantages of 14-6 in shots and 4-3 in corner kicks.

The Bucs got 10 saves from Fernando Flores.

Cape Henlopen 7, Sussex Tech 0: Jacob Schell tallied a goal in each half in the Vikings’ Henlopen North victory.

Six different players scored for Cape Henlopen, which led 3-0 at halftime. The Vikings outshot the Ravens, 16-2.

Ronin Mozingo made nine saves for Sussex Tech.

Smyrna 1, Polytech 0: A first-half goal stood up for the Eagles in the North victory.

Delmar 3, Laurel 2: Three different players scored goals for the Wildcats in the Henlopen South win.

Brian Hill, Darwin Lopez-Ponce and Damian Kunie all scored for Delmar while Caleb Ritchey made 19 saves.

Diego Berduo and Crisanto Paw scored for the Bulldogs with Noah Ros making eight saves.

Sussex Academy 3, Woodbridge 1: The Seahawks netted a pair of first-half goals before earning the Henlopen South victory.

College volleyball

Hornets win two more: The Hornets added two more victories to their 10-game winning streak with a 3-2 victory over Binghamton and a straight-set victory over Merrimack on the first day of the Mountaineer Invitational hosted by West Virginia.

Against Binghamton, Delaware State had four players with 10 or more kills, led by Valeria Otero, who tied a match-high with 20. Alondra Maldonado finished with 16 kills and two assisted blocks.

The Hornets had three setters record double-digit assists with Malgorzata Andersohn leading the way with a season-best 31.

Maldonado had a game-high 10 kills against Merrimack while Andersohn recorded 22 assists.
