Local roundup: Smyrna rallies in seventh for baseball win; CR goes to 3-0 in girls' soccer

Catcher James Tassone singled home Dwayne Ratcliffe with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Smyrna High a dramatic 8-7 win over Milford in Henlopen North baseball on Thursday afternoon.

The Eagles (2-0), who trailed 7-0 after the second inning, rallied for three runs in the seventh.

Smyrna got one run on a bases-loaded wild pitch before Connor Wilson bunted home Jake Macey with the tying run. Tassone then lined a single to left field to score Ratcliffe.

Smyrna’s other runs came in a five-run third with Junior Durnall collecting a double in the outburst.

Macey earned the win in relief after pitching 4.2 innings.

Shawn Saxon had a first-inning double and two-run single in the second to highlight the Buccaneers’ nine-hit attack.

Boys’ lacrosse

Salesianum 19, Smyrna 0: The Sals blanked the Eagles in a non-conference contest.

The matchup was the season opener for the DIAA defending state champion Sals. It’s the first of four contests Sallies is slated to play against Henlopen Conference teams during the regular season.

The Eagles, who host Milford in their Henlopen North opener next Wednesday, dropped to 0-2.

Middletown 14, Milford 5: Peyton Sumner tallied five goals with Graham Lindsay adding four as the Cavaliers downed the Buccaneers in a non-conference matchup.

It was the season opener for both squads.

Girls’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 5, Dover 0: Gabrielle Davis and Allyson Durham tallied two goals apiece in the Riders’ Henlopen North opener.

Madelyn Reed added the other goal for CR (3-0), which held advantages of 21-2 in shots and 5-0 in corner kicks.

Smyrna 8, Sussex Central 1: The Eagles opened their Henlopen North schedule with the victory on Thursday night.

Desiree Zapata netted three goals for Smyrna (2-0) with Jade Balon adding two goals and a pair of assists. Kelly Barr (1 assist), Marlayna Pennington (1 assist) and Kayla Abbott had the Eagles’ other goals.

Bayleigh Perdue scored for the Golden Knights.

College bowling

DSU’s Reardon wins rookie award: Delaware State freshman bowler Sydney Reardon was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year as four Hornets were honored on the All-MEAC team.

Reardon, a three-time MEAC Rookie of the Week, averaged 197.26 pins in traditional play this season. She recorded a frame average of 19.72 and hit at least nine pins on the first ball nearly 70 percent of the time.

Reardon, who was also named to the All-MEAC second team, the second consecutive Delaware State MEAC Rookie of the Year and third in the past four years.

Also for the Hornets, Saralynne Nassberg was named to this season’s All-MEAC first team. In 662 total frames, Nassberg recorded an average of 20.29 per frame, tallying a strike 50.8 percent of the time.

DSU’s Emily Breidegam and Kelsey Cummings were both named to the All-MEAC third team.

Delaware State will compete in the MEAC Tournament this upcoming weekend.

College basketball

Hens’ Dickey picks up another honor: Already a back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year and AP All-American honorable mention, Delaware women’s basketball player Jasmine Dickey was one of 10 players selected as regional finalists for the WBCA Division I Coaches All-America team.

Dickey is currently tied for second in NCAA Division I with 25.3 points per game. She also averaged 10.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.9 steals while shooting 40.2 percent from the floor.

This past season, Dickey has scored in double figures 30 of her 31 appearances and tallying a career-best 19 double-doubles.

College softball

Sienna 23, Delaware State 2: The Hornets dropped to 1-17 with the loss on Thursday.

Senior infielder Jaelyn Baker launched her second home run of the season over the center field wall in the bottom of the third inning. Her two-run homer accounted for DSU’s only runs.
