Smyrna High won the final two individual matches to pull out a dramatic tie-breaker win over Caravel in wrestling on Wednesday night.
An 8-2 decision by Ian Alfree in the last bout (106 pounds) left the match tied at 36-36. The Eagles then won on the tiebreaker — number of maxium-point victories, 5-4.
Smyrna, which evened its record at 9-9, also got a pin in 1:36 from Chijioke Eule (285) to close within three points with one match left.
Also winning by fall for the Eagles were Wyatt Miller-Hall (120), Tyree Heath (138), and Kael Howell (190).
Cape Henlopen 62, Lake Forest 18: Tripp Gannon (106) posted a 26-second pin with Patrick Donahue (190) adding a fall in 46 seconds to spark the Vikings.
Cape Henlopen’s other pins came from Holt Baker (126), Joshua Wright (138), Braydon Cole (144), Andrew Schaen (150), Charles Fritchman (175) and Sean Costello (285).
The Spartans got pins from DeMarion Russ (113) and Shawn Ferrell (165).
First State Military 45, Hodgson 30: Gavin Wright (113) and Sean Hitchens (215) both had pins for the Bulldogs, who improved to 8-4.
Indian River 46, Delmar 24: A 42-second pin by Kyree Knight (138) was the fastest of five pins for the Indians.
IR also got pins from Amani Marsiglin (113), Angel Mora Salas (157), Jayvion Chandler (165) and Terrell Lewis (285).
The Wildcats won three matches by fall, getting pins from Jazmon Snead (126), Ryan Goehner (132) and Kane Johnson (175).
Red Lion Christian 46, Polytech 30: The Panthers picked up four pins in the non-conference loss.
Winning by fall for Polytech were Wyatt Rivera (106), Tyler Rosan (126), Avery Rosah (132) and Aiden Garrett (150).
Boys’ basketball
Milford 45, Sussex Tech 39: The Buccaneers improved to 9-8 with the North victory.
Laurel 85, Delmar 56: The Bulldogs improved to 12-4 with the South victory.
Cape Henlopen 53, Sussex Central 45: The Vikings (11-5) picked up their second straight North win.
Girls’ basketball
Early College 44, Indian River 38: The Hornets improved to 14-2 after posting the Henlopen South win.
Seaford 42, Sussex Academy 31: The Blue Jays raised their record to 8-9 with the South victory.
Sussex Tech 58, Milford 28: Daijah Bailey netted 18 points to pace the Ravens to the North win.
Akira Perry added 12 points for Sussex Tech, which out-scored the Buccaneers, 36-12, in the second half.
