Smyrna High built a nine-poimt lead going into the fourth quarter before downing Howard, 50-43, in a non-conference girls’ basketball game on Thursday night.
The win was the third in a row for the Eagles, who improved to 9-4.
Sophomore guard Kai Burnette finished with 24 points for Smyrna, which also got 11 from Jayde Rivera. Rivera hit three three-pointers with Burnette adding the Eagles’ other two.
Cape Henlopen 61, Appoquinimink 55: The Vikings (12-2) built a 43-33 lead after three quarters before holding off the Jaguars.
Faith Re, who sank four three-pointers, finished with 23 points, Amalia Frutchman added 10 points and Hayden Hudson collected six points, seven rebounds and seven assists. The victory was the 12th in a row for Cape Henlopen.
Dover HS 43, St. Georges 41: The Senators out-scored the Hawks, 18-6, in the third quarter to open up a 12-point lead before holding on for the win.
Sussex Central 49, Sussex Academy 23: The Golden Knights improved to 5-8 with the victory.
Boys’ basketball
Polytech 72, Woodbridge 50: The Panthers (11-2) out-scored the Blue Raiders by a combined 42-16 in the second and third quarters before stretching their winning streak to eight games in a row.
Senior Xavier Brewington netted a game-high 19 points after sinking three three-pointers. Dorell Little (15), Kyle Gamber (15) and Brett Shelton-Hoskins (13) also finished in double figures as Polytech hit eight threes.
Bruce Mosley had 18 for Woodbridge with Ci-Atrick Stones adding 14.
Lake Forest 45, Milford 36: The Spartans overcame an early five-point deficit by out-scoring the Buccaneers, 29-19 in the second half.
Sophomore Darius Miller tallied 19 points for Lake Forest with Jackson Starkey adding 10 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the foul line.
Milford got 11 points from Jayden Norman.
Appoquinimink 60, Cape Henlopen 54: The Jaguars out-scored the Vikings, 18-13, to put away the non-conference win.
Delmarva Christian 68, Salisbury Christian 31: The Royals raised their record to 9-3 with the victory.
Wrestling
Caesar Rodney 68, Polytech 7: The Riders posted 10 pins, including six in the first period, before picking up a Henlopen North win on Wednesday night.
Winning by fall for CR were Alexander McEvoy (106 pounds), Cole Moffett (113), Nick Moore (120), Trevor Copes (126), Nathan Moore (132), Antonio Darby (138), Craig Dixon (144), Cameron Cataldi (157), Owen Dixon (175) and Owyn Meister (190).
College basketball
MEN, Hampton 67, Delaware 66: Jordan Nesbitt capped off a 31-point night by sinking a pair of foul shots with just 12 seconds left as the Pirates stunned the Blue Hens.
Hampton, which is playing its first season as a member of the CAA, improved to 2-7 in the league, 5-16 overall. Delaware fell to 3-6 CAA, 11-11 overall after having its five-game winning streak against the Pirates snapped.
After Nesbitt’s two free throws gave Hampton the lead, Jameer Nelson, Jr. missed a jumper just before the final buzzer.
The Hens led by as many as 12 points in the contest. Jyare Davis finished with a team-high 20 points, Nelson, Jr. had 17 and Christian Ray collected 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Hens made just 16-of-25 free throws while Hampton was 12-of-15.
