Local roundup: Smyrna girls down Dover, Polytech tops CR in OT

Smyrna High gradually pulled away to a 58-46 victory over Dover in Henlopen North girls’ basketball on Tuesday night.

The Eagles led 27-19 by halftime before improving to 5-3 with their third win in the last four games.

Senior Jayde Rivera tallied 17 points for Smyrna with Skylar Curley adding 11 and Kai Burnette scoring 10. Rivera hit three of the Eagles’ five three-pointers.

The Senators got 13 points from Ashtyn Torbert and 11 from Sara Zionna Benson.

Polytech 52, Caesar Rodney 42, OT:  The Panthers out-scored the Riders, 11-1, to pull away. CR used a 14-5 run in the fourth quarter to tie the contest at 41-41 and force OT.

For Polytech, Kallie Hopkins (20 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals) and Sky Naranjo (11 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals) both had double-doubles. Lakiyah Hilliard added 11 points while Jasryn Scott-Cottman had 10 rebounds and three assists.

Cape Henlopen 58, Sussex Tech 22: The Vikings out-scored the Ravens 26-6 in the second half to put away the win in a showdown of two of the Henlopen North’s top teams.

Ja’Onna Lee collected 19 points and eight rebounds for Cape (6-0 North, 8-2 overall) while Faith Re (5 assists) and Mya Maull (4 assists, 4 steals) both scored 11. Hayden Hudson added eight points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Woodbridge 78, Sussex Academy 16: The Blue Raiders tallied 30 points in the third quarter alone of the Henlopen South victory.

Payton Keeler (21 points, 5 assists, 6 steals) had a game-high 21 points for Woodbridge with Reghan Robinson (16 points, 4 assists), Tiana Neal (11) and De’Asya Jones (10 points, 5 assists, 8 steals) also scoring in double figures.

Seaford 38, Lake Forest 28: The Blue Jays took a 20-12 halftime lead before picking up the Henlopen South victory.

Boys’ basketball

Polytech 70, Caesar Rodney 38: The Panthers used a 23-6 second-quarter run to open up a 42-16 halftime advantage and stay unbeaten in the North.

Dorell Little (22), Kyle Gamber (18), Xavier Brewington (12) and Brett Shelton-Hoskins (10) all scored in double figures for Polytech, which made eight three-pointers in the contest.

Senior Steven Smith had 10 points for the Riders.

Dover 85, Smyrna 47: The Senators picked up the Henlopen North victory after out-scoring the Eagles, 46-19, in the second half.

Denim Perkins, Kendall Abrams and Kameron Jackson-Dixon all netted 12 points for Dover, which had 11 players score in the contest.

The Eagles were led by Obi Coleman (13) and Danny Lerro (11).

Cape Henlopen 73, Sussex Tech 43: The Vikings ended the contest on a 26-10 run to close out the North win.

Indian River 69, Delmar 53: Brendon Bradford netted 23 points to pace the Indians to the South victory.

Bradford and Jamaal Jones (17) combined to sink 11 of IR’s 13 three-pointers. Rashad Hopkins added 10 points.

Takai Hugee scored 23 points for the Wildcats with Patcharadanai Suha scoring 11.

Woodbridge 98, Sussex Academy 17: The Blue Raiders rolled to the Henlopen South victory.

Archmere 52, First State Military 28: Damier Bryan scored 12 points for the Bulldogs in the Diamond State Conference loss.
