The No. 13 Smyrna High boys’ basketball team used a big second half to pull away from No. 20 St. Georges for a 67-46 victory in the first round of the DIAA boys’ basketball state tournament on Tuesday night.
The Eagles (13-7) blew the game open thanks to a 17-0 run in the second half. Lish Gregory paced Smyrna with 24 points.
Smyrna advanced to play at No. 4 Howard on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Caesar Rodney 57, Archmere 33: The No. 21 Riders overcame a first-quarter deficit to reach the tournament’s second round.
Caesar Rodney (13-8) trailed 13-10 after the first quarter but outscored the No. 12 Auks, 47-20, the rest of the way.
The 22nd-seeded Riders will play at No. 5 Sanford Thursday at 7 p.m.

Laurel 68, A.I. du Pont 63: Javier White netted 24 points to lead the No. 17 Bulldogs to a road victory in the first round.
The Bulldogs (17-4) will play at top-seeded Salesianum in the second round on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Delmar 59, Woodbridge 54: Davin Chandler and Takai Hugee each had 22 points as the No. 19 Wildcats rallied after trailing by 12 at halftime.
Delmar (14-7) advanced to the second round where it will play at No. 3 seed Tower Hill Thursday at 7 p.m.
Seaford 76, Tatnall 62: Tyrese Fortune scored the 1,000th point of his career to highlight the Blue Jay opening-round win.
Seaford, seeded 10th, improved to 17-4 and will travel to No. 7 seed Appoquinimink at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
St. Andrew’s 55, Delmarva Christian 54: Brandon Graves converted a layup with seconds remaining to lift No. 18 seed St. Andrew’s over the 15th-seeded Royals.
College baseball
Maryland 14, Delaware 4: Kevin Keister, a Caravel Academy product, went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, a double and two walks to lead No. 21-ranked Maryland over the Blue Hens.
The Terrapins scored four runs in the bottom of the second and led the rest of the way.
Delaware was led by Joey Loynd, who knocked in a pair of runs, and Nick Vera who went 3-for-4 while J.J. Freeman recorded an RBI double.
Women’s lacrosse
Maryland 15, Delaware 2: Mercy McCarthy came off the bench to make 17 saves — fifth all-time for Delaware — in the Hens’ loss to the No. 4-ranked Terrapins.
Maryland took 39 shots, with 36 shots on goal — which is a UD record for most shots faced in a game. Sydni Rosa and Danika Swech provided the goals for the Hens.
College basketball
MEN, Coppin State 80, Delaware State 67: The Hornets led by 13 points midway through the first half, but couldn’t keep up the pace in the MEAC loss on Monday.
The Eagles won their seventh straight over the Hornets to improve to 7-21 overall and 6-7 in the MEAC.
The Hornets dropped their 22nd straight game to fall to 2-24 and 0-13.
Dominik Fragala also came off the bench to lead Delaware State with 24 points, highlighted by four three-pointers. Myles Carter added 17 points and a team-high five assists while Chris Sodom had a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Hornets close out the regular season at Maryland-Eastern Shore on Thursday night.
WOMEN, Coppin State 67, Delaware State 55: Freshman center Unique Miller scored 10 of her career-high 23 points in the first quarter to help the Hornets to a 16-8 lead.
But Delaware State couldn’t hold onto the advantage as it fell to 0-13 MEAC, 0-22 overall on Monday.
Miller added 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Janasia Law finished the night with 16 points, including four three-pointers.
Hornets’ Miller honored: Delaware State freshman center Unique Miller has been named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Co-Rookie of the Week.
For the week, Miller averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds. This is the second time she has been honored by the MEAC.
College softball
Pair of Hens win awards: Delaware had two players earn CAA Player of the Week honors: Senior third baseman Hanna Garber was named the CAA Player of the Week, while junior pitcher Emily Winburn earned CAA Pitcher of the Week honors.
Garber batted .625 (10-for-16), leading Delaware to a 3-1 week. She recorded seven extra-base hits, with three home runs, eight RBI and eight runs scored. Garber was twice one hit short of a cycle.
Winburn appeared in all four games in the circle, posting a 2-0 record with a 2.15 ERA. The righty struck out 16 batters over 13.0 innings.
College bowling
DSU’s Breidegam earns MEAC honor: Delaware State freshman bowler Emily Breidegam was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for a third time this season.
Breidegam was the MEAC’s top finishing freshman at the Vern Stallings Invitational hosted by North Carolina A&T over the weekend. She finished 18th overall after recording a weekend average of 195.2 pins over five games.
Breidegam knocked down a total of 976 pins as she surpassed the 200-pin mark three times with a personal-best of 211.
