Local roundup: Smyrna-Clayton stays alive in District I Majors; MOT reaches 8-10 finals

Smyrna-Clayton downed Camden-Wyoming, 9-5, on Tuesday evening to stay alive in the District I Major League baseball tournament.

Smyrna-Clayton (1-1) will take on Felton-Harrington (1-1) on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. in the double-elimination tourney being played at Dover.

Milford (2-0) takes on MOT (2-0) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the winners’ bracket finals with the winner advancing to Friday’s district finals.

8-10 tournament

MOT 5, Camden-Wyoming 0: The Middletown-area squad advanced to the District I finals with the victory on Tuesday.

The title game will be played on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Smyrna-Clayton. The district champion earns a spot in the state tournament in Sussex County.

Winning pitcher Bill Windley allowed just one hit and struck out 11 in 5.1 innings before William Fitzgerald closed out the contest. MOT pitchers have allowed just three hits and two runs in 15 innings in the tourney.

Offensively, Windley (3-for-3, 3 RBI), Dawson Soldo (2-for-2, 1 RBI) led MOT.
Camden-Wyoming (1-1) plays in the losers’ bracket finals on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Senior League

East Regional

New Jersey 6, Georgetown 0: The Delaware state champions lost their opener in the East Regional on Tuesday afternoon.

Georgetown plays again on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament being held in Bangor, Maine.

The loss snapped a seven-game all-star tournament winning streak for Georgetown.

Softball

8-10

Cape 7, Canal 0: The District III champions started the state tournament with the shutout win on Tuesday.

Cape next takes on MOT on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Camden-Wyoming in the three-team tourney. The state champion receives a berth in the East Regional in Pittstown, Pa.

Senior League

Camden-Wyoming to open vs. Pa.: State champion Camden-Wyoming will open the Senior League East Regional against Pennsylvania on Saturday at 3 p.m.

The nine-team tournament is being played in Worcester. Camden-Wyoming is in the five-team Pool B along with Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

The championship game is slated for July 26 with the winner advancing to the Senior League World Series at Lower Sussex in Roxana.

Camden-Wyoming avanced to the regional after splitting a doubleheader with New Castle/Suburban on Sunday night. Suburban won the first game, 15-10, but CW won the nightcap, 15-9, to take the state title.

In the first game, Camden-Wyoming was led by Audrey Carroll (5-for-5), Ciara Maldonado (4-for-5, 2 doubles), Brooke Turner (3-for-5) and Maddie Wood (2-for-4, 2 runs). Pitchers Amy Gaddis and Maddie Correll combined for nine strikeouts.

In the championship game, Maldonado (home run), Amiya Carpenter, Wood and Samantha Wilson all went 4-for-4. Turner added three hits, including a triple, while winning pitcher Kyla Davis struck out five.

Maddie Fuller pitched all three state tournament games for New Castle/Suburban.

Wrestling

Smyrna’s Giampietro honored: Smyrna High wrestler Gabe Giampietro was recently named a winner of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award.

The award, which is given annually by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, goes to a senior wrestler from each state for their success in wrestling, academics, citizenship and community service. Giampietro, who won state titles in each of his three high school seasons, is continuing his career at Drexel University.

WNBA

Delle Donne earns league honor: Former Delaware basketball star Elena Delle Donne has been named the WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week.

This marks her first Player of the Week recognition this season and the 24th of her career. The Mystics forward is averaging a team-high 17.0 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

During the week, Delle Donne averaged 22.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game while shooting 55.8 percent from the field, The 10-year pro picked up her 108th career 20-plus point game.
