Local roundup: Smyrna, Cape advance in hockey; Lake, Laurel, Sussex Tech win in football

Second-seeded Smyrna High erupted for five second-quarter goals before posting a 7-0 victory over No. 7 Appoquinimink in the DIAA Division I field hockey state quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon.

The Eagles (14-2) will take on No. 3 Wilmington Charter (14-2) in the state semifinals on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the University of Delaware’s Rullo Stadium.

Freshman Bree Moffett tallied three goals and a pair of assists for Smyrna in Thursday’s victory while Kirsten Johnson and Dru Moffett (1 assist) both scored twice. The shutout was the Eagles’ 10th of the season.

Catherine Jones made 12 saves for the Jaguars (9-7).

Cape Henlopen 6, Milford 0: The top-seeded Vikings scored four goals in the second half to put away the quarterfinal win.

Cape Henlopen (15-2) will take on fourth-seeded Padua (9-7) on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Rullo Stadium in the state semifinals. The Vikings beat the Pandas, 8-0, at Rullo on Oct. 15.

Milford finishes the season at 7-8-1.

Padua 4, Caesar Rodney 1: The fourth-seeded Pandas scored the game’s first four goals before downing the No. 5 Riders in the quarterfinals.

Payton Shields scored with 4:33 left for CR (10-6) while Bailey Minear made 13 saves. Padua finished with advantages of 18-7 in shots and 12-6 in corners.

Wilmington Charter 5, Sussex Tech 2: The third-seeded Force downed the No. 6 Ravens in the quarterfinal victory.

Karli Penod scored both goals for Sussex Tech (8-8) in the fourth quarter.

Football

Lake Forest 48, McKean 14: The Spartans ended the regular season a three-game winning streak to put its overall record at 8-2.

Lake Forest out-scored its opponents, 155-35, during that three-game stretch.

Laurel 42, Delmar 13: The Bulldogs finished the regular season a perfect 10-0 after winning the Lions Club Trophy for the second year in a row.

Defending Class 1A state champion Laurel will take a 13-game winning streak into the state tournament.

Sussex Tech 34, Odessa 12: The Ravens overcame an early 6-0 deficit before finishing the season at 4-6 with the win over the Ducks (5-5).

Howard 52, Woodbridge 22: The Wildcats improved to 8-1 while the Blue Raiders ended the season at 2-8 with the loss.

Indian River 62, Eary College 28: The Indians posted the Class 1A victory to finish the regular season at 5-5.

Boys’ soccer

Sussex Central 4, Delcastle 3, OT: Elian Velasquez-Lopez scored in the second overtime to give the No. 7 Golden Knights the upset win over the second-seeded Cougars in the DIAA Division I state quarterfinals on Thursday night.

Javier Escobar-Perez tied the contest at 3-3 with six minutes left in regulation for Sussex Central (11-5), which advances to Wednesday’s semifinals, which are being played at Dover.

Woodbridge 5, Conrad 1: The seventh-seeded Blue Raiders netted four first-half goals before picking up the win in the first round of the DIAA Division II tournament on Wednesday night.

Davis Gonzalez-Gutierrez and Luis Cruz-Gutierrez both had a goal and assist for Woodbridge, with Cristofer Morales-Rivera, Derek Barrientos and Angel Gonzalez-Deleon also scoring goals.

The Blue Raiders (11-4-1) next play at No. 2 Indian River (11-1-2) on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the quarterfnals. The Indians won the regular-season meeting with Woodbridge, 2-1, on Oct. 27.

CR, Cape games on Saturday: The two DIAA Division I boys’ soccer games slated for Friday have been moved to Saturday because of the expected bad weather.

On Saturday, Caesar Rodney will now face Wilmington Charter at Wilmington Friends at 1:30 p.m. with Cape Henlopen hosting Appoquinimink at 7 p.m.

College basketball

MEN, Delaware State 104, Immaculata 67: Brandon Stone netted 25 points with Khyrie Staten adding 21 in the Hornets’ win over the Division III Macs on Thursday.

Four players reached in double figures and 11 players scored for Delaware State (1-1), which led 47-29 at halftime. The Hornets next play at Villanova on Nov. 14.

WOMEN, Columbia 64, Delaware 56: The Lions broke open a tied game before out-scoring the Blue Hens, 17-9, in the third quarter to take control.
Tara Cousins netted 12 points for Delaware (1-1) with Jewel Smalls adding 11.
