Caleb Matthews netted 28 points and seven assists to lead Smyrna High to a 65-53 victory over Archbishop Ryan in boys’ basketball on Friday evening.
The contest was played at Chester, Pa. High as part of the Rondae Jefferson Classic.
The Eagles are now 6-0 and have won 24 straight games since last season.
Also for Smyrna, Greg Bloodsworth had 14 points with Nalik Veasley-Johnson adding 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Eagles next face Howard on Dec. 27 at noon at Cape Henlopen at Slam Dunk to the Beach.
Sussex Tech 73, Woodbridge 65: Jaquan Burton netted 19 points to pace the Ravens to the win on Thursday night.
Burton went 13-of-13 from the foul line. As a team, Sussex Tech hit 29-of-36 free throw compared to 16-of-31 for the Raiders.
Khalil Bolden (14), Devon Reynolds (14) and Ricky Kane (13) also scored in double figures for Sussex Tech, which led 15-6 after the first quarter.
Woodbridge was led by Hassan Corbin (21), Breyon Goss (17) and Kejon Mosley (10). Goss sank five of the Raiders seven three-pointers.
Girls’ basketball
Smyrna 52, Seaford 39: Jayla Smith tallied 21 points with Marqueisha Bennett adding 19 as the Eagles (1-4) picked up their first win on Thursday.
Smyrna built a 39-24 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Tamara Evans had a team-high 18 points for Seaford with Zynaisa Ramil scoring 11.
Padua 64, Cape Henlopen 60: The Vikings outscored the Pandas, 20-14, in the fourth quarter before falling short on Thursday.
Niyashja Mosley (15), Dania Cannon (10) and Sydney Pederson (10) led Cape Henlopen. Pederson hit three of the Vikings’ seven three-pointers.
Wrestling
Sussex Central 44, St. Georges 24: The Golden Knights collected three pins in earning the nonconference victory on Friday.
Mason Ankrom (106 pounds), Rashad Stratton (132) and Devin Pearsall (160) all won by fall for Central, which won nine individual matches.
Smyrna 44, Laurel 24: The Eagles built a 38-3 lead with five individual matches remaining before posting the win on Thursday night.
Hunter Moyer (220 pounds), Anthony Wuest (285) and Joseph Natarcola (106) ran off a string of first-period pins to put Smyrna in control.
Mike Giampietro (152) and Gregory Baum (145) also won by fall for Smyrna.
For the Bulldogs, Isaiah Jenkins (120) and Ti’yon Dorman (126) both had pins.
College basketball
MEN, Nebraska 85, Delaware State 68: The Hornets fell behind by 16 points at halftime before keeping the game close in the second half.
The loss was the eighth in a row for DelState (2-12).
Kavon Waller had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead four Hornets scoring in double figures. Also leading DSU were Artem Tavakalyan (13), Simon Okolue (13) and Pinky Wiley (12).
The Cornhuskers, who led 42-26 at halftime, also had four players finish in double figures.
WOMEN, Delaware 71, Loyola 38: A double-double of 23 points and 20 rebounds from junior forward Nicole Enabosi carried the Blue Hens to the nonconference win.
Enabosi set a school record by tallying her eighth straight game with a double-double while her rebound total was the highest for a Blue Hens player since Sharon Wisler posted 20 in 1989. It was just the fifth 20-20 game in school history.
Delaware (7-4) has now won three straight games and five of its last six contests. The Hens trailed the Greyhounds (2-9) by a 15-11 margin at the end of the first quarter but rallied to outscore Loyola, 49-17, in the second and third quarters.
Freshman Justina Mascaro added a season-best 12 points while senior Kiersten West collected 10 points and a career-high eight rebounds.
College football
Four Hornets honored: Four Delaware State football players have been honored on Phil Steele’s all-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference team.
Steele’s All-MEAC first-team selections included Delaware State punter Fidel Romo-Martinez, while Hornet defensive back Keyjuan Selby was a second-team pick. Listed on the third team are DSU’s Brycen Alley as a kick returner and Trey Gross at wide receiver.
Romo-Martinez was tops in the MEAC and fourth among all FCS punters with a 44.7-yard average. He also had 24 punts of 50-or-more yards, including a long of 62, and placed 17 kicks inside the opponents’ 20-yard line this past season.
Selby was tied for second in the MEAC with 13 passes defended and 11 pass break-ups. He was also tops on the Hornets with two interceptions and fourth on the team with 59 tackles (36 solo).
Gross emerged as one of the MEAC’s top receivers after entering the Hornets’ starting lineup in mid-season. He finished the season with 27 catches for 428 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns, which tied for second among all MEAC pass catchers. His seven touchdowns and 42 points were also tops on the Hornets.
Gross had two touchdown catches in three games this past season.
Alleyne was third in the MEAC in kickoff returns with a 21.7-yard average and was sixth in the league with 90.5 all-purpose yards per game.
