Local roundup: Smyrna boys down Hawks; Cape girls' rally falls short

Smyrna High limited St. Georges to just 13 first-half points before registering a 51-43 victory over the Hawks in a non-conference boys’ basketball game on Monday evening.

Only three players scored for the Eagles, led by Majesti Carter with 22 points. Elisha Gregory added 19 points while Kevin Woodruff tallied 10. Smyrna led 30-13 at halftime.

The Eagles (11-7), who have won four of their last five games, close the regular season on Wednesday by hosting Cape Henlopen at 6:30 p.m.

Caesar Rodney 66, Newark Charter 46: The Riders went up 26 points by halftime before registering the win.

It was the third victory in a row for the Riders (11-8), who were paced by Messiah Antwi (17 points), Mekhi Tribbett (16) and Craig Williams (10).

CR finishes the regular season with a 6:15 p.m. game at Milford on Tuesday night.

Milford 60, Polytech 56: The Buccaneers raised their record to 60-56 with the Henlopen North win.

Woodrow Wilson, N.J. 69, Dover 56: The Senators had a six-game winning streak snapped as it ended the regular season at 16-3.

Middletown 68, Cape Henlopen 40: The Cavaliers used a 22-8, second-quarter run to take control of the non-conference contest. Eleven players scored for Middletown.

Laurel 78, Sussex Tech 67: The Bulldogs raised their record to 15-4 with the victory.

Girls’ basketball

Ursuline 54, Cape Henlopen 50: The Vikings ended the game on a 22-9 run before falling short.

Mehkia Applewhite netted 16 points with Julia Saleur adding 12 for Cape Henlopen, which trailed 45-28 going into the fourth quarter.

Polytech 34, Sussex Central 29: The Panthers built a 19-12 halftime lead en route to the Henlopen North victory.

Kallie Hopkins netted 10 points for Polytech, which closes the season by hosting Central on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

The Golden Knights were led by Takyla Davis with 18 points.

Woodbridge 55, Delmarva Christian 50: The Blue Raiders took a 10-point advantage into the fourth quarter before holding off the Royals.

Reghan Robinson (16), Iyanna Mims (13) and Payton Keeler (11) all scored in double figures for Woodbridge, which sank 19-of-26 free throws. Robinson and Keeler combined for five three-pointers.

College basketball

MEN, South Carolina State 79, Delaware State 74: The Hornets battled back from an eight-point, halftime deficit before falling to 0-11 in the MEAC, 2-21 overall.

WOMEN, South Carolina State 64, Delaware State 52: The Hornets dropped to 0-11 in the MEAC, 0-20 overall with the road loss on Monday.

DelState trailed by only three before being out-scored, 17-3, in the second quarter.

College football

Carty adds to Hens’ staff: Delaware football coach Ryan Carty has announced the addition of Garrett Smith as tight ends coach and Nick Hunter will serve as defensive quality coach.

Additionally, a pair of current members of the coaching staff will transition into new roles. Defensive backs coach Holman Copeland will now hold the title of recruiting coordinator and Terence Archer will move from tight ends to wide receivers coach and serve as the passing game coordinator.

The Blue Hens lost Chris Buckner, who worked briefly as wide receivers coach, passing game coordinator and recruiting coordinator before taking a job at Texas State.

College lacrosse

UD’s Miller honored by CAA: Delaware men’s lacrosse attacker Clay Miller has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week.

Miller came off the bench to score a career-high five goals in the Blue Hens’ 12-11 win on the road at St. Joe’s. Miller’s five goals was his third hat trick in as many games.

Delaware (3-0) was voted No. 14 in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll, and No. 17 in both the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Inside Lacrosse polls. The Blue Hens play a 3 p.m. game at No. 7 Duke on Tuesday.

College volleyball

UD promotes Lambert to head coach: Kimberly Lambert has been named Delaware’s head volleyball coach after spending the past five seasons on the Blue Hens’ staff.

Prior to coming to Delaware, Lambert served as an assistant coach at North Carolina State, Marshall and Rice during her 20-year career. A Texas native, sh also served three seasons as the head coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi from 2006-08 and was an assistant at UTEP.

Lambert replaces Sara Matthews, who left Delaware to become the associate head coach at Notre Dame.

College bowling

Hornets finish second in event: The Delaware State University bowling team finished second at the MEAC No. 2 Tournament over the weekend.

The Hornets recorded an 11-5 record over two days and tallied a total pinfall of 17,674 finishing only behind sixth-ranked North Carolina A&T.

Delaware State was led by the freshman duo of Kelsey Cummings and Emily Breidegam. Cummings finished first overall while Breidegam finished eighth securing the only top-10 finishes for the Hornets.

College softball

Hartford 12, Delaware State 1: The Hawks completed a three-game sweep of the Hornets on Sunday. Sandrea Hord and Felicity Munoz had two hits each to account for DSU (0-3).
