Local roundup: Smyrna bounces back with North win over Cape

Smyrna High tallied five first-half goals before blanking Cape Henlopen, 6-0, in a Henlopen North girls’ soccer matchup on Thursday evening.

Desiree Zapata scored three goals with Jade Balon adding two for the Eagles, who bounced back from their first loss of the season to improve to 2-0 in the North, 3-1 overall.

Dru Moffett netted the other goal for Smyrna, which beat the Vikings for the second-straight season.

Cape Henlopen had a three-game winning streak snapped to fall to 1-1 in the North, 3-2 overall.

Polytech 5, Dover 2: Five players scored goals in the Panthers’ Henlopen North victory.

Brooklyn Davis, Addison Hake, Madison Barber, Megan Popp and Justs Dungee all scored for Polytech, which led 3-0 at halftime. The Panthers held advantages of 14-2 in shots and 3-0 in corner kicks.

Michelle Cortes and Saniyah Coles netted the Senators’ goals.

Caesar Rodney 5, Sussex Central 1: Olivia Hudson netted two first-half goals with Kailyn Maull scoring twice in the second half for the Riders (4-0).

Gabrielle Davis (1 goal) and Allyson Durham both had two assists for CR, which out-shot the Golden Knights, 22-3.

Lake Forest 2, Woodbridge 0: Freshman Lacey Hutson scored a pair of first-half goals in the Spartans’ Henlopen South victory.

Haydan Parker and Lily Wood picked up assists while goalie Kyra Moyer had two saves.

Nandua, Va. 6, Seaford 0: Nandua tallied five first-half goals before downing the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Baseball

Caesar Rodney 8, Woodbridge 3: The Riders scored the game’s final seven runs to even their record at 2-2.

Reliever Graham Buckson threw four no-hit, shutout innings to earn the win while Colson Bennett (2 hits) drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth. Andrew Rigby and Chrys Roscoe both homered for CR.

Austin Griffith reached base three times and scored for the Blue Raiders.

Sussex Central 9, Seaford 0: Chet Mariner pitched a five-inning six-hitter to earn the shutout for the Golden Knights.

A.J. Cannon and C.J. Willey both had two hits with Brenden Anderson hitting a two-run homerun for Central.

Archmere 11, First State Military 0: Jaydan Duncan, Preston Shetzler, and Jayson Caldwell had hits for the Bulldogs in the Diamond State Conference loss.

Softball

Archmere 16, First State Military 3: Riley Worral homered while Paige Holowka had two hits in the Bulldogs’ loss to the Auks.

Boys’ lacrosse

Archmere 22, First State Military 1: Christopher Allen netted the Bulldogs’ lone goal in their Diamond State Conference setback.

College lacrosse

Two UD men make list: Delaware men’s lacrosse players Owen Grant and Mike Robinson have been named to the Inside Lacrosse Midseason All-American list announced on Thursday.

Grant, a senior defenseman, was named to the second team. He leads the Blue Hens and is tied for 17th in the country with 15 caused turnovers. He’s also scooped up 21 ground balls.

Robinson, a junior attacker, was named as an honorable mention candidate. He leads Delaware with 30 goals, in addition to nine assists. He ranks No. 11 in the NCAA in goals per game (3.33).

Roadrunners go to 7-2: Delaware Tech improved to 7-2 after beating Mohawk Valley on Saturday.

For the season, Brandon Tice (Lake Forest) has 39 goals and seven assists; Conor Christie (Milford) has 35 goals and 22 assists; Jack Dennis (Cape Henlopen) has 37 goals and 19 assists; Matt Kracyla (Middletown) has 23 goals and nine assists; Bryce Wells (Milford) is 106-for-141 on faceoffs with 64 ground balls; and Louis Savino (Middletown) is 72-for-117 on faceoffs.

In 372 minutes in goal, Caleb Secrist (Lake Forest) has a 51.7 save percentage while Brody McMillan (Milford) has a 62.2 save percentage in 136 minutes.
