Local roundup: Smyrna blanks Dover 4-0 in girls’ soccer

Smyrna High netted three first-half goals before downing Dover, 4-0, in Henlopen North girls’ soccer on Thursday evening.

Freshman Desiree Zapata tallied three goals with Karalyn Osborne adding the first goal for Smyrna (3-0 North, 6-2 overall). The shutout was the Eagles’ second of the season.

The Senators are 1-3 in the North, 4-4 overall.

Caesar Rodney 2, Sussex Tech 0: Jada McCullough scored in the first half with Gabrielle Davis adding a goal in the second half in the Riders’ Henlopen North victory.

Gabrielle DiBartola made 10 saves for CR, which held advantages of 20-12 in shots and 11-2 in corner kicks.

The Ravens’ Alexandra Johnson stopped 14 shots.

Polytech 1, Milford 0: Julia Coleman’s second-half goal and Delaney Dillon’s shutout helped the Panthers improve to 6-0.

Sussex Central 2, Cape Henlopen 0: Bethany Perdue tallied a goal in each half to lift the Golden Knights to the North victory. Shellie Velasquez-Gonzalez made eight saves.

Julie Hefernan made four saves for the Vikings, who finished with advantages of 8-6 in shots and 7-0 in corner kicks.

Indian River 6, Lake Forest 0: Madison Tipton scored twice in the first half while Anastasia Diakos added two second-half goals in the Indians’ South win.

IR finished with advantages of 23-5 in shots and 6-1 in corner kicks.

Kaitlynn Perna made 17 saves for the Spartans.

Delmar 11, Seaford 2: The Wildcats netted eight first-half goals before picking up the South win.

St. Georges 4, Woodbridge 0: Anjolie Suberro made 15 saves for the Raiders in the loss.

Baseball

Delmar 5, Dover 1: Luke Waters delivered a two-run single for the Wildcats while Bryce Hendricks went 2-for-2 with a walk.

Pitcher Hunter Chambers struck out eight in five innings for the Senators.

Caesar Rodney 17, Newark Charter 8: The Riders capped off the road win with a seven-run sixth.

Jake Armstrong, Josh Harvey, Andrew Rigby, Mason Wrede, David Dill and Alex Bauer all contributed multiple hits to CR’s total of 15. Winning pitcher Nathaniel Garrison struck out five in 4.1 innings.

Milford 15, Seaford 5: Mason Morris went 2-for-3 with three runs and five RBI as the Buccaneers (9-1) won their ninth in a row.

Alex Mergner and Thomas Leighty both added two hits, two runs and a pair of RBI for Milford while four pitchers combined for a two-hitter.

Zane Adams and Branden Widdowson had Seaford’s hits.

Cape Henlopen 6, Indian River 1: Winning pitcher Nick Cox struck out nine in six innings for the Vikings.

Hunter Rauch (triple, 1 RBI, 2 runs) and Josh Reinhold (1 RBI, 1 run) had three hits apiece for Cape while Gage Joseph had a triple and three RBI.

The Indians’ Kyle Coffey had a hit and a run scored.

Sussex Central 20, Sussex Academy 1: A.J. Cannon went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and five RBI to lead the Golden Knights.

Cole Jester (3 hits), Brendan Anderson and William Boyle also homered for Central.

Wesley McLaughlin and Tyler Hudson had two hits each for the Seahawks.

Delmarva Christian 16, Holly Grove 6: The Royals won their fourth in a row to improve to 4-3.

Softball

Smyrna 5, Sussex Tech 4: Sheridan Price scored the winning run on a bunt by Gianna Duca as the Eagles rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Price also homered and drove in Hailey McCutchan in the bottom of the seventh to tie the North contest at 2-2.

Brynn Parker had a pair of RBI in the fifth to give the Ravens a 2-1 lead.

Sussex Central 7, Indian River 2: Makenna Messina had three hits for the Golden Knights, who scored four runs in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie.

Winning pitcher Madge Layfield struck out 10 with no walks.

IR’s Logan Marvel was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Sussex Academy 3, Delmarva Christian 2: The Royals scored twice in the bottom of the sixth on a Rachel Carey double and singles from Paige Tidwell and Caelynn Jorgensos.

Cape Henlopen 9, Woodbridge 6: Winning pitcher Marissa Frederick struck out 13 and also had two hits at the plate to lead the vikings.

Dru Beuhler had three RBI for Cape, which scored four runs in the sixth to rally from a 6-5 deficit.

Delmar 21, Polytech 3: The Wildcats led only 2-0 before erupting for 14 runs in the third.

Zoey Coco went 4-for-5 with two RBI for Delmar while Ally Marly (5 RBI) hit a three-run homer.

Mackenzie Mitchell had two hits for the Panthers with and Julia MacConnel adding two RBI.

Caesar Rodney 22, Early College 0: Kaitlyn Horton and Chloe Donigan both homered for the Riders in the win.

Girls’ lacrosse

Sussex Tech 13, Caesar Rodney 10: Ava Dunn and Nataleigh Hunter netted four goals apiece in the Ravens’ Henlopen Conference win on Wednesday night.

Elise Hensley had four goals for the Riders.

College field hockey

Delaware 1, William & Mary 0: Grace Hoepfner deflected a shot from Femke Strien and Emily Kresho in the 55th minute for the game winner that sent the Blue Hens to the CAA finals.

Delaware (5-3) will host top-seeded James Madison on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the title.

Five Hens honored: Five Delaware field hockey players were honored on the All-CAA team, led by Julia Duffhuis, who was tabbed the CAA Rookie of the Year.

The Blue Hens also had three players selected to the All-CAA first team: Delmar High grad Ashlyn Carr, Emily Kresho and Femke Strien. Carr leads the team in points with two goals and six assists.

Berber Bakermans joined Duffhuis on the All-CAA Rookie Team.

College football

DSU’s Milstead up for award: Delaware State coach Rod Milstead is among the finalists for the prestigious Eddie Robinson Award for the top coach in college football’s FCS Division I.

Delaware State matched its 2019 11-game total with two wins in five contests this spring, including a 37-28 victory at Howard on April 3 to snap the Hornets’ 34-game road losing streak.

DSU fell short of its first winning season since 2012 with its 31-28 overtime loss to South Carolina State on April 17.

College lacrosse

UD’s Kitchen on award list: Delaware’s Charlie Kitchen was named one of the 25 male Tewaaraton Award nominees. Kitchen has 43 points on 22 goals and 21 assists through eight games.
