Local roundup: Senators, Riders both notch girls' lacrosse wins

Dover High netted four goals in each half before starting the season with an 8-4 win over Caravel in girls’ lacrosse on Wednesday evening.

The Senators, who went 12-4 a year ago, got three goals apiece from Superia Clark and Ashtyn Tobert (1 assist). Kyleigh Dill (1 assist) added the other two goals with Shiana Hall-Carter making six saves.

Dover led 4-2 at halftime over Caravel, which went 16-1 last season.

Caesar Rodney 17, Mt. Pleasant 2: The Riders got goals from 12 players in improving to 2-0.

Ella Price (3 assists), Elle Roberts, Rylie Faircloth, Sophie Morgera and

Alexandra Mardesich all scored twice. Melissa Dolt made six saves.

Sussex Academy 18, Sussex Tech 0: The Seahawks netted 15 first-half goals before registering the win.

Salisbury School, Md. 12, Indian River 6: The Indians opened the season with a non-conference setback.

BOYS, Sussex Academy 11, Dover 7: The Seahawks downed the Senators in the season opener for both squads.

Polytech 8, Indian River 7: The Panthers edged the Indians in their opener.

Queen Anne’s, Md. 12, Caesar Rodney 6: The Riders fell t 0-2 with the non-conference loss.

Boys’ volleyball

Cape Henlopen 3, Concord 0: The Vikings opened the season with a 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 victory.

Leading Cape Henlopen were Odin DeLazaro Potemski (7 kills, 2 aces), Ethan Shuttleworth (5 aces, 16 assists) and Dylan Henry (4 kills, 3 blocks).

Sussex Academy 3, St. Mark’s 2: The Seahawks won the final three sets to pull out the 20-25, 25-27, 25-17, 25-11, 15-12 victory.

Pacing Sussex Academy were Zachary Yenovkian (14 kills, 7 aces, 8 assists) and Adam Bailey (6 kills, 7 aces, 20 assists).

Smyrna 3, Mt. Pleasant 0: The Eagles improved to 2-0 with the 25-22, 25-23, 25-16 victory.

Indian River 3, Dickinson 0: The Indians picked up the win by scores of 25-14, 25-7, 25-17.

Girls’ soccer

Woodbridge 1, First State Military 0: Alexia Carroll’s goal in the 64th minute gave the Blue Raiders the victory.

Woodbridge finished with advantages of 7-4 in shots and 4-2 in corner kicks.

Sussex Central 8, Laurel 0: The Golden Knights netted four goals in each half of their win on Tuesday.

Delmarva Christian 9, Christiana 0: The Royals tallied six goals in the second half to close out the victory.

Baseball

Smyrna 10, Mt. Pleasant 5: The Eagles erupted for five runs in the top of the eighth to win their season opener on Tuesday.

Connor Wilson and James Tassone each collected three hits to pace Smyrna’s 14-hit attack while Sean Keener added two hits and three stolen bases.

Reliever Jake Macey, who had two hits, earned the victory.

Delmar 9, Caesar Rodney 0: Winning pitcher Andrew Callaway struck out 10 and didn’t walk a batter in six shutout innings for the Wildcats.

Tucker Pierson went 3-for-3 while Ryder Keidel was 2-for-2 with a double.

Mason Wrede doubled for CR.

College football

Eight local players part of Pro Day: A total of eight local college football players, six from Delaware and two from Delaware State, worked out for NFL scouts on Wednesday in Newark.

For the Blue Hens, Frank Burton III, Gene Coleman II, Dae’lun Darien, Nijuel Hill, David Kroll and Dejoun Lee were put through drills and tested in front of scouts from six organizations.

“Today was surreal,” said Lee. “It’s a moment you dream about and have been preparing toward for a long time. And to finally experience it is a dream come true. I couldn’t be more excited for what is next.”

College lacrosse

WOMEN, UMBC 14, Delaware 11: Riley Gillin tallied a career-high six points on three goals and three assists, while Danielle Livornese added a career-high three goals for the Blue Hens (2-7).

St. Francis 17, Delaware State 7: Rosella Nardi netted three goals with Emmy McGill adding two for the Hornets (1-7).

College equestrian

DelState hosting ECACs: Delaware State is hosting the ECAC Dual Discipline Championship at Harrington’s Delaware State Fairgrounds this weekend.

The six-team tournament begins with first-round competition on Thursday at the Quillen Arena. Competition is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. each day.

Delaware State is the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 Minnesota Crookston in the opening round. The winner will take on No. 1 seed SMU, which earned a first-round bye.

Thursday’s other opening-round match will feature No. 4 seed UC Davis against No. 5 South Dakota State, with the winner taking on No. 2 Tennessee Martin.

The semifinal competition is set for Friday and the championship match will be held on Saturday.
