After going a couple weeks without winning a game, Dover High’s football was ready to start winning again.
On Saturday afternoon, the Senators got themselves back on track, rolling to a 40-0 win over William Penn in a Class 3A matchup to snap their two-game losing streak.
Quarterback Nahseem Cosme ran 58 yards for one touchdown and threw for two more and Dover (6-3) strengthened its DIAA state tournament resume with one regular-season game remaining.
“We needed that,” said Dover coach Chip Knapp. “We’ve been giong through some adversity here and we needed to find a way to win. You can always get a little better but it was a good win for our guys.”
Leading 16-0 at halftime, Dover broke the game open with 24 unanswered points in the third quarter. Five different players scored touchdowns for Dover, which also got a 35-yard field goal and five PAT kicks from Brandon Yoder as well as a safety on a high snap by the Colonials (2-6).
Cosme finished with 99 yards on seven carries while completing 3-of-8 passes for 58 yards. The junior QB threw a 25-yard scoring pass to John Parker and a 27-yarder to Taishaun Allen.
Jakwon Kilby scored on a seven-yard run with sophomore linebacker Rasheed Branch-Calhoun returning a fumble 37 yards for another TD.
The shutout was the Senators’ second of the season.
“Some guys who normally don’t get to play got to play and, because of that, it was a positive win,” said Knapp. “Some guys got to show what they can do.”
