Local roundup: Seaford girls hold off Panthers

Seaford High built a 19-point lead going into the fourth quarter before notching a 56-48 victory over Polytech in girls’ basketball on Wednesday night.

Kimyra Cornish-Baine (15 points), Amira Tingle (14) and Kimora Cornish-Baine (12) all scored in double figures for Seaford, which improves to 15-4. The Blue Jays close the regular season on Friday with a Henlopen South contest at Woodbridge.

The Panthers, who out-scored the Blue Jays, 23-12, in the fourth quarter, got 17 points from Kallie Hopkins, 11 from Kendall Maday and 10 from Anjae Sorrell. Hopkins hit three threes.

Indian River 40, Sussex Central 39: The Indians (4-14) edged the Golden Knights on Tuesday to post their third win in the last four games.

Boys’ basketball

Caesar Rodney 79, Sussex Tech 63: Craig Williams tallied a team-high 20 points, going 10-of-12 from the foul line, to pace the Riders to their second win in a row.

Anthony Aglio (16), Steve Smith (14) and Mekhi Tribbett (12) also led CR, which made 23-of-33 free throws.

Jameel Watson had 20 points for the Ravens, who also got 16 points from Isaiah Ayers.

Delmar 86, Sussex Academy 46: The Wildcats (10-6) snapped a four-game losing streak with the Henlopen South victory.

Cape Henlopen 48, Smyrna 42: The Vikings (6-8) picked up their second win in the last three games with the Henlopen North victory over the Eagles on Tuesday night.

The two squads play again on Feb. 23 at Smyrna.

Indian River 47, Sussex Central 40: Tuesday night’s contest was tied before the Indians out-scored the Golden Knights, 23-12, in the third quarter.

Brendon Bradford netted 16 points with Jamison Bender adding 11 for IR. The two combined to sink seven three-pointers in the intra-district matchup.

College basketball

WOMEN, Morgan State 67, Delaware State 42: The Hornets dropped the MEAC decision on Wednesday to fall to 0-9 MEAC, 0-18 overall.

Junior guard Alexis Moragne led Delaware State with 14 points, 10 of which came from the free throw line, where she went 10-for-13. She recorded team-bests in rebounds and assists with six and three respectively.

Freshman forward Unique Miller and freshman guard Sianny Sanchez-Oliver chipped in with seven points apiece. Miller hauled in seven boards while Sanchez-Oliver dished out three assists in the loss.

The Hornets continues their three-game road swing on Saturday with a MEAC game against North Carolina Central. Tipoff from the McDougald-McLendon Arena in Durham, N.C. is set for 2 p.m.
