Former Seaford High coaching legend Ron Dickerson passed away on Saturday, the school announced.

Known as ‘Captain Dick,’ Dickerson led the Blue Jays to four state championships — two in football and two in baseball.

Ron Dickerson

In the early 1980s, Dickerson coached Seaford to three straight football state championship games. The Jays won the Division I state crown in 1981 and the Division II title in 1983.

The Laurel High grad coached Seaford for 28 seasons starting in 1973 after working as an assistant there for four seasons. His teams won 191 games, nine Henlopen Conference division titles and made the state tournament 11 times during that span.

In baseball, Dickerson led the Jays to state championships in 1983 and ‘86. His teams included future major leaguers Delino DeShields and Mike Neill and won 102 games in seven seasons.

As a player, Dickerson was a second-team All-Stater at Laurel and an all-conference plater at Shepherd College.

Freshman Ashlyn Carr (Delmar) led the way with a season-high two goals while sophomore Grace Hoepfner and juniors Sophie Giezeman and Femke Strien also tallied goals.

The Hens have won a program-record 19 straight CAA regular-season games. Delaware has won nine straight over the Huskies, who still lead the all-time series, 17-14.
