Local roundup: Seaford boys cruise past Appo in state tourney

Seaford High went into Appoquinimink High Thursday night and blew the game wide open on its way to a 76-57 victory in the second round of the DIAA boys’ basketball state tournament.

The Blue Jays, seeded 10th, raced out to a 21-7 lead after the first quarter, capped off by a Brent Ricketts buzzer-beater. They advanced to the quarterfinals where they will play No. 18 seed St. Andrew’s at a time and location to be announced.

Kashmeir Wise led all scorers with 30 points.

Howard 83, Smyrna 54: The defending state runner-ups fell to No. 4 seed Howard.
Lish Gregory paced the Eagles with 15 points while Majesti Carter added 13 and Devin DeMoe followed with 11.

Howard’s Darius Brown was the game’s top scorer with 20 points. The Wildcats will meet fifth seed Sanford on Saturday.

Salesianum 66, Laurel 55: The Bulldogs were leading the tournament’s top seed after the first quarter until the Sals rallied.

Salesianum advanced to play Dover in the quarterfinals.

Tower Hill 60, Delmar 44: The third-seeded Hillers pulled away from No. 19 seed Delmar in the second half for a second round victory.

Tower Hill is set to meet No. 22 seed St. Mark’s in Saturday’s quarterfinal.

College basketball

MEN, UMES 63, Delaware State 59: The Hornets (0-14 MEAC, 2-24 overall) finished the conference season winless after a tight conference game at Maryland Eastern Shore.

Zach Kent led the Hornets with 17 points in a game neither team led by more than six points. L.J. Stansbury netted 13 points for Delaware State.

Da’Shawn Phillips paced the Hawks with 16 points.

WOMEN, Delaware 85, Towson 71: The Blue Hens (15-2 CAA, 21-6 overall) opened up a 27-9 lead after the first quarter and held on behind Ty Battle’s double-double.

Battle recorded 24 rebounds to go along with 18 points. Ten of her rebounds came on the offensive end.

Tyi Skinner led Delaware with 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting while Jasmine Dickey followed with 23 points.

UMES 66, Delaware State 48: The Hawks dealt Delaware State (0-14 MEAC, 0-23 overall) another defeat on Thursday night.

Alexis Moragne led the Hornets and all scorers with 23 points. Breazia Robinson contributed eight points with seven rebounds.

UMES was paced by Mahogany Lester’s 11 points and 10 from Brooklyn Bailey.

College baseball

DSU’s Paige earns MEAC honor: Delaware State University sophomore third baseman Trey Paige has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Week.

In the Hornets’ season-opening four-game series at Charleston Southern, Paige recorded six hits in 14 at-bats for an .429 average. Of his six hits, four of which were extra-base hits.

Paige drove in five runs and drew three walks.

College golf

Hornet golfer earns notice: Delaware State seniors Ana Ferreyra-Heit earned Honorable Mention recognition for Southland Conference Golfer of the Month.

She was Delaware State’s top performer, tying for 10th overall, in a field of 96 competitors with a three-day total of 222 at the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islander Classic. Her performance was highlighted by a final-round score of 72.
She recorded a total of 25 birdies in the tournament to tie for fifth in the field.
