The Cape Henlopen High girls’ basketball team went to Sanford on Friday night looking to prove itself against perhaps the best squad in the state.

But the Vikings found out they’ve still got some work to do.

Sanford used a 16-point, second-half run to take control before picking up a 43-25 victory over Cape Henlopen in a showdown between schools at the opposite ends of the state.

The Vikings trailed just 21-19 when Morgan Mahoney hit a three-pointer with 5:27 left in the third quarter. But Cape didn’t score again until there was just 4:49 left in the contest.

By then, Sanford’s advantage had grown to 37-19. The Vikings got as close at 37-25 before Sanford netted the game’s final six points.

The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak for the Vikings (13-4) and was only their second setback to a Delaware team this season. Julia Saleur scored a team-high 10 points for Cape, which made only 10 field goals in the game.

The Warriors, who had three players in double figures, are 12-2 with a 9-0 record against Delaware schools.

Ursuline 47, Woodbridge 43: The Blue Raiders out-scored Ursuline by three in the fourth quarter before falling short.

Hodgson 49, Sussex Tech 39: The Silver Eagles out-scored the Ravens by 18 points after the first quarter to pull away.

Laurel 65, Sussex Academy 30: The Bulldogs built a 32-13 halftime lead before earning the Henlopen South win.

Caesar Rodney 46, Sussex Central 21: The Riders opened up a 16-2, first-quarter advantage in the North win on Thursday.

Boys’ basketball

Middletown 72, Woodbridge 56: The Cavaliers led by only one point at halftime before out-scoring the Blue Raiders, 44-29 in the second half to take control.
Ty’renne Hynson tallied 21 points to pace Middletown.

Emanuel McCrea-Mosley tallied a game-high 28 points for Woodbridge (10-4).

Polytech 59, Sussex Central 43: The Panthers evened their overall record at 8-8 after winning their second straight North contest.

Laurel 68, Sussex Academy 48: The Bulldogs stretched their winning streak to five games in a row.

College basketball

WOMEN, Delaware 66, Northeastern 63: The Blue Hens squandered a nine-point lead with five minutes remaining only to pull out the CAA road win in the closing minute.

Trailing 60-51 with 5:06 left, the Huskies used a 12-2 run to take a one-point advantage. But a pair of free throws by Tyi Skinner gave Delaware back the lead at 64-63 with 1:05 left.

Tara Cousins then gave the Hens some insurance when she sank a jumper with just 18 seconds remaining. Delaware’s Tee Johnson blocked a Northeastern three-pointer with eight seconds on the clock before the Huskies (6-5 CAA, 12-9 overall) missed a followup three with two seconds left.

Cousins finished with a team-high 19 points for Delaware (11-1 CAA, 17-5 overall) after sinking 5-of-7 three-pointers. Skinner added 17 points while Jasmine Dickey added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The victory was the Hens’ seventh in a row over Northeastern.
