Delaware State News
Salesianum took over in the second half, pulling away to a 19-8 victory over Caesar Rodney High in boys’ lacrosse on Thursday.
The contest was suspended on Tuesday because of lightning. It resumed with the Sals leading 8-5 with 8:15 left in the third quarter.
CR (13-2) outscored Sallies, 4-3, in the second quarter to close within 7-5 at halftime. The Sals outscored the Riders, 12-3, in the second half.
Demetrius Stevenson, Noah Longest (1 assist) and Jarred Wagenhoffer all scored twice for CR, which was outshot, 42-23. Jacob Stant made 11 saves.
Smyrna 17, St. Georges 3: Jack Guzman tallied five goals, breaking the program’s single-season scoring record, as the Eagles closed the regular season with a victory.
Smyrna (9-6), which has won six of its last seven games, also got four goals from Hayden Compton and three from Jason Zeitler. Matthew Miller made eight saves.
Boys’ volleyball
Indian River 3, Concord 0: The Indians picked up the victory by scores of 25-22, 25-18, 25-19.
IR was paced by Michael Barnes (14 kills, 2 aces, 12 digs), Micthell McGee (14 kills) and Alexander Canseco Castro (28 assists).
Delmarva Christian 3, Brandywine 0: The Royals downed the Bulldogs, 25-13, 25-17, 25-23.
Leading Delmarva Christian were Seth Stevens (4 kills, 6 aces, 25 assists), Austin Giltner (9 kills, 3 aces) and Evan Timko (7 kills, 6 aces, 5 blocks).
Baseball
Salesianum 2, Sussex Tech 1: The Ravens dropped the nonconference decision in their regular-season finale to fall to 2-1.
College baseball
Northeastern 10, Delaware 0: The Blue Hens saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with the CAA loss.
Delaware (29-24, 12-10 CAA) had its opportunities in the game, but Northeastern (32-17, 16-6 CAA) stranded 11 Blue Hens runners on base. The loss also snaps the Hens’ five-game CAA winning streak.
College track & field
Wesley men take ECAC title: The Wesley College men won the team championship at the two-day Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships held at Johns Hopkins University.
Wesley swept the relays and picked up an individual championship in the 100. Christian Saulsbury narrowly defeated teammate Greg Taylor in the 100-meter dash.
Saulsbury clocked in at 10.80 seconds while Taylor crossed the line in 10.81 seconds.
Saulsbury, Taylor, John Heriot and TySean Cousar won the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 41.66 seconds, a full second faster than the second-place team. Cousar, Heriot, Dominic McAnulty and Thomas Kalieta Jr. took the 4x400-meter relay (3:13.30) finishing three seconds faster than second place with the fastest time in the Mideast Region and fourth fastest in the nation.
The Wesley women placed sixth at the ECACs.
The Wolverines swept the sprints. Rakiya Taylor won the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Taylor clocked in at 12.29 seconds in the 100 and 24.96 seconds in the 200. Both times are personal bests.
Briyanna Woods picked up a win in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 57.63 seconds, fourth-best in the Mideast Region.
College softball
Burton named all-region: Caesar Rodney High grad Rosa’Lynn Burton was a first-team selection on the Division II Conference Commissioners Association All-East Region team.
It is the second year in a row that Burton, a sophomore outfielder for Wilmington University, has been named a D2CCA All-East Region first-team selection.
She led the Wildcats and finished second in the CACC with a .470 batting average. Burton led the CACC with 87 hits, 56 runs, and 42 stolen bases while finishing second in the league with seven triples, and a .527 on-base percentage.
Wesley’s Royer honored: Wesley College’s Ashley Royer was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Atlantic Region third team.
A captain on this year’s team, Royer ranked third in the Capital Athletic Conference in hitting and fifth in on-base percentage. She tallied a .446 batting average and reached base at a .486 clip. She recorded two home runs with 21 runs batted in, 25 runs scored, 10 runs scored and one triple.
Hens’ Steinmetz honored: Delaware junior catcher Anna Steinmetz was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I All-Northeast Region third team.
Steinmetz, an honorable mention pick in 2016, becomes the fifth player in Blue Hen history to earn multiple all-region honors along with Lauren Mark, Kristi O’Connell, Carolynn Sloat and Mariah Kondravy.
Steinmetz, who was selected first-team All-CAA last week, started all 49 games for the Hens this season, including 25 behind the plate. She led Delaware with 12 doubles, 10 home runs and 38 RBI while hitting .341 on the year and posted 13 multi-hit games on the season.
