Local roundup: Riders use big inning to top Spartans 5-1 in softball

Caesar Rodney High used a five-run outburst in the top of the sixth inning to register a 5-1 win over Lake Forest in Henlopen Conference softball on Saturday afternoon.

Winning pitcher Peyton Shields struck out seven for the Riders (12-2) while Rachel McCleary, Stacey Deputy, Lyric Abdul-Rasheed, and Kaitlyn Horton each had a hit.

CR’s 12 victories are the most for the program since 2016.

Jessica Reed had a pair of hits for the Spartans, who scored a run in the top of the seventh.

Laurel 1, Delaware Military 0: The Bulldogs improved to 12-3 by handing the Seahawks (10-2) just their second loss of the season.

Appoquinimink 3, Smyrna 2: Aleixa Fitzgerald’s single scored Olivia Marrinucci with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to give the Jaguars the walk-off win.

Fitzgerald also drove in the tying run on a sixth-inning fielder’s choice while Lilly Papellas added Appo’s other RBI.

The Eagles got RBI singles from Taylor Lipkins and Sydney Eihinger.

Delmar 13, Padua 3: Autumn Boothe, Amber Cooper and Josie Hollamon all homered for the Wildcats, who scored six runs in the fifth to break open a 3-3 game.

Boothe and Jordyn Hollamon each contributed three hits to Delmar’s total of 15 hits in the contest.

Sussex Central 11, Newark Charter 0: Madge Layfield pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts to earn the shutout for the Golden Knights.

The win was the 13th in a row for Central (13-1) as well as the 400th career victory for coach John Wells. Katelyn Evick homered, McKenna Boyle had three hits and Aryanna Briddell added a pair of doubles to lead the Knights’ 15-hit attack.

Concord 10, Cape Henlopen 6: The Raiders, who hit three homeruns, led 9-3 after three innings before downing the Vikings.

Jay’Lyn Slater had an RBI and of Cape’s three hits while pitcher Marissa Frederick added a triple and an RBI single.

Delmarva Christian 16, Ursuline 3: Candice Schlabach belted four homeruns with Grace Fetterman added another for the Royals.

Delmarva Christian exploded for 10 runs in the first inning, finishing with 17 hits in the contest.

William Penn 3, Seaford 2: The Colonials scored a run in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie,

Jada Evans pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts for Seaford while Sage Larimore had an RBI single.

Baseball

Delmar 8, Salesianum 7: The Wildcats erupted for all eight of their runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the unlikely win.

Bryce Hendricks singled home the winning run while Dylan Pasta and Chase Collis had two hits apiece.

Dover 6, Newark Charter 5: The Senators scored the contest’s final six runs to rally for the road win.

Alec Rodriguez had a homer, double and three RBI for Dover with Hunter Chambers pitching the last five innings to earn the victory.

Polytech 13, Glasgow 0: Kyle McVey pitched a five-inning one-hitter as the Panthers (6-5) won their fifth game in a row in a contest played at Frawley Stadium.

Connor Barlett, who doubled, Joseph Masten and Dale Austin all had triples for Polytech.

Appoquinimink 7, Cape Henlopen 6: The Jaguars overcame a 6-1 deficit to win it on a run at the bottom of the eighth.

Chase Fleming pitched four scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.

Justin Marsh had two hits and two RBI for the Vikings while starting pitcher Tyler Husband allowed only one hit with five strikeouts in five innings.

St. Mark’s 10, Sussex Tech 1: Winning pitcher Jack Burns struck out 11 for the Spartans.

Jason Shockley had two of the Ravens’ six hits.

Sussex Academy 9, Caesar Rodney 7: The Seahawks rallied for five runs in the fifth to take the lead before posting the win on Friday at Frawley Stadium.

The Riders scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying runs on base before reliever Brayden Tidwell earned the save. Chet Mariner pitched the first five innings to take the victory while Patrick Donahue (3 hits), Douglas Horton (triple, 2 RBI) and Tidwell (3 runs) paced Sussex Academy’s offense.

CR was led by David Dill (homer, double), Jacob Armstrong (triple, double) and Andrew Dill (2 hits, 2 RBI).

Boys’ lacrosse

Polytech 7, St. Georges 4: Samuel Slater netted three goals and a pair of assists as the Panthers evened their record at 5-5.

Goalie Aidan Stephan made nine saves.

Cape Henlopen 21, Tower Hill 6: Henry D’Ambrogi tallied four goals and seven assists for the Vikings, who led only 7-4 before running off the game’s next 12 goals.

Gabriel Best added three goals and an assist while Carson Kammerer and Michael Sposato combined for seven saves.

Sussex Tech 12, Woodbridge 8: The Ravens picked up the victory in a game played on Friday.

Girls’ lacrosse

Dover 16, Delaware Military 3: Superia Clark netted six goals and three assists to pace the Senators.

Kyleigh Dill added five goals and an assist with Ashtyn Torbert scoring three goals and Kylla Henry scoring twice. Regan Torbert made six saves for Dover, which out-scored the Seahawks, 10-2, in the second half.

Boys’ volleyball

Cape Henlopen 3, Brandywine 2: The Vikings earned the close, five-set victory on Friday, winning the match by scores of 25-21, 25-18, 21-25, 26-28, 15-13.

College baseball

Hens swept at Hofstra: Hofstra took both ends of a CAA doubleheader from Delaware, 9-0 and 8-7.

The Blue Hens (4-11 CAA, 8-17 overall) have now lost seven games in a row. Pitcher Dom Velazquez (Dover) gave up only two runs while striking out eight over seven innings in the opener.

DSU drops two: Coppin State topped Delaware State, 13-12 and 13-11, in a MEAC twinbill in Dover.

In both games, the Hornets rallied in their last at-bat before falling short. They scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh of the opener and five runs in the nightcap.

College softball

Hens take split: Delaware softball team hit four homers in the opener as the Blue Hens split a doubleheader at Mount St. Mary’s.

Delaware took the opener, 13-6, before the Mountaineers answered with a 5-1 victory in the nightcap.

Brooke Glanden (Lake Forest) hit a pair of two-run homers in the first game for the Hens (21-7) while Lexi Moore (Smyrna) added an RBI single.
