Local roundup: Riders end North skid vs. Smyrna; Laurel's White nets 45

Caesar Rodney High won only two more individual matches than Smyrna on Wednesday night.

But the Riders made those victories count in earning a 34-32 win over the Eagles in their Henlopen North wrestling showdown.

CR (6-1 North, 7-4 overall) picked up 11 bonus points in beating Smyrna (5-2 North, 6-2 overall) during the regular season for the first time since 2012. The Riders did edge the Eagles in the DIAA Division I state finals in 2018.

A third-period pin from Alexander McEvoy (106 pounds) with two matches left gave CR a 34-13 advantage. Brock Conner (170) and Shamir Nelson (195) also won by fall for the Riders.

Smyrna didn’t have any pins but did win the final bout by forfeit.

Sussex Central 60, Polytech 11: The Golden Knights collected six pins in posting their second Henlopen North victory of the day.

Central picked up pins from Tony Williams (120), Evan Broomall (132), Caden Cope (152), Josh Negron (195), Michael Harmon (285) and Malachi Stratton (106).
Connor Bartlett (220) won by fall for the Panthers.

Sussex Central 55, Sussex Tech 12: Chase Murray (113) had a 42-second pin while Caden Cope (152) added a fall in 52 seconds to spark the Golden Knights’ first victory of the day.

Also posting pins for Central were Malachi Stratton (106), Evan Broomall (132) and Gabe Cannon (182).

Diego Santiago (285) had a second-period pin for the Ravens.

Woodbridge 43, Seaford 33: A pin from Khelei (285) in the second-to-last match sealed the South win for the Blue Raiders.

Delmar 65, Dover 7: The Wildcats got four straight pins, each in under a minute, to break open the match.

Noman Ahmed (138), Carter Figgs (145), Trent Kemp (152) and Ryder Keidel (160) all won by fall during that stretch.

Conner Ridgeway (220) had a major decision for the Senators.

Indian River 66, Concord 9: The Indians got pins from Kyree Knight (126), Evan Forjan (138), Bryce Rickabaugh (170), Clayton Cifuentes Roblero (195) and T.J. Burke in the non-conference win.

Boys’ basketball

Seaford 76, Laurel 72, OT: Freshman Kashmeir Wise poured in 31 points, including four three-pointers, to spark the Blue Jays’ Henlopen South win.

Wise’s performance, though, was topped by the Bulldogs’ Javier White, who finished with 45 points and hit seven threes.

Tyrese Fortune (14) and Brent Ricketts (13) also led Seaford, which out-scored Laurel, 12-8, in overtime.

Nifere Griffin (11) and Omori’Yon (10) scored in double figures for Laurel in a contest that featured 18 three-pointers.

Indian River 51, Lake Forest 37: Brendon Bradford had 13 points with Rashad Hopkins adding 12 in the Indians’ South win.

The Spartans’ Darius Miller netted 12.

Girls’ basketball

Lake Forest 56, Early College 21: Gabrielle Almonte tallied 18 points and Karly Cain added 15 as the Spartans stayed unbeaten in the South.

The Hornets’ Niacah Furlow scored 17.

College basketball

MEN, Coppin State 59, Delaware State 57: Nendah Tarke’s short jumper with just two seconds left lifted the Eagles to the MEAC win.

Delaware State (0-5 MEAC, 2-16 overall) led by five at halftime. D’Marco Baucum led the Hornets with 13 points.

Hens to finish game on Feb. 28: The Colonial Athletic Association has announced that the Delaware at Towson men’s basketball game, which was suspended due to unsafe court conditions on Jan. 27, has been rescheduled for Feb. 28 at 6 p.m.

The game will resume with the Blue Hens leading, 38-29, with 18:42 remaining in the second half. The contest will give the Blue Hens one more game at the end of the regular season before the CAA tournament starts on March 5.

WOMEN, Coppin State 64, Delaware State 56: Janasia Law (17), Unique Miller (17) and Alexis Moragne (16) led the Hornets (0-3 MEAC, 0-12 overall) in the MEAC loss.
