Alex Bauer doubled home Alex McEvoy with the winning run in the top of the eighth inning as Caesar Rodney High edged Dover, 3-2, in Henlopen North baseball on Thursday afternoon.
The win was the Riders’ first over the Senators since 2018. Three of the last four meetings in the rivalry have been decided by only one run.
After CR took the lead, Dover’s Joell Gray doubled in the bottom of the eighth. But, with runners on first and third and one out, Bauer and Graham Buckson turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Andrew Rigby and winning pitcher Tate Wisniewski combined to throw a four-hitter with 15 strikeouts for the Riders (3-4 North, 8-7 overall). Chrys Roscoe went 3-for-3 and reached base four times.
For the Senators (2-5 North, 5-9 overall), Sir William Bauer hit a solo home run while pitcher Hunter Chambers had a pair of hits and was on base four times.
Smyrna 10, Sussex Central 2: The Eagles used a six-run third to open up a 10-2 lead in the North victory.
Winning pitcher Liam Meginniss struck out seven in five 2/3 innings to earn the win.
Troy Morris had two hits for the Golden Knights.
Sussex Tech 9, Polytech 7: The Ravens scored the game’s final six runs to rally for the North victory.
Rosnell Lewis (3-for-5, 2 RBI) and Kade Hall (homer, double) led Sussex Tech while reliever Landon Ruark struck out seven in the final four innings to earn the win.
Conner Bartlett had two hits for the Panthers.
Sussex Academy 2, Seaford 1: Pitcher Wyatt Skinner doubled home the winning run in the top of the ninth to lift the Seahawks.
Skinner, who had three of Sussex Academy’s five hits, pitched all nine innings, allowing only seven hits with 10 strikeouts on 104 pitches.
The Blue Jays’ Dalton Hignutt had two hits.
Laurel 6, Indian River 5: The Bulldogs edged the Indians to earn the South win.
Delmar 5, Lake Forest 3: The Wildcats downed the Spartans in a Henlopen South matchup.
Milford 13, St. Andrews 1: Mason Morris threw a five-inning one-hitter with seven strikeouts and also went 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBI for the Buccaneers.
Also leading Milford were Aydin Zimmerman (3 hits, 2 RBI) and Nick Hurd (2-run double). St. Elizabeth 5, First State Military 3: The Vikings scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie against the Bulldogs, who got a triple from Steven Bright.
Softball
Delmarva Christian 6, Woodbridge 3: The Royals rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to pull out the victory.
Lilli Showacre pitched a five-hitter for Delmarva Christian (8-3), which is now 5-0 against Henlopen teams this season.
Sussex Central 10, Smyrna 2: Madge Layfield pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts for the Golden Knights, who broke the game open with a seven-run second.
Makenna Messina, McKenna Boyle, Layfield and Kate Evick all contributed three hits to Central’s total of 14.
The Eagles’ Meghan Shirey had a hit and reached base three times.
Caesar Rodney 12, Dover 0: The Riders improved to 14-2 with the shutout win.
Delmar 11, Lake Forest 1: Ashlyn Tapman pitched a five-inning two-hitter and went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles to pace the Wildcats.
Josie Hollamon added a two-run home run for Delmar, which had 15 hits in the contest.
Rylee Barlow and Bobbi Newsome had the Spartans’ hits.
Seaford 12, Sussex Academy 2: Hannah Moore tossed a three-hitter while Aitanna Bennett went 3-for-3 for the Blue Jays.
St. Elizabeth 11, First State Military 1: Delaney SMith had 11 strikeouts with Monnay Hollis adding a hit and scoring the Bulldogs’ run.
Girls’ lacrosse
Polytech 19, Smyrna 10: The Panthers outscored the Eagles, 11-5, in the second half to put away the Henlopen Conference win on Wednesday.
Madison Todd (5 goals, 1 assist), Molly Kenney (4 goals, 1 assist), Elise Diantonio (3 goals, 1 assist) and Elizabeth Szell (2 goals, 3 assists) all paced Polytech (7-5). Adelyn Mollhan made 11 saves for Polytech, which held a 40-16 edge in shots.
Smyrna was led by Regan Nacrelli (3 goals, 1 assist) and Madison Fillo (2 goals) with Addison Beamer making 16 saves.
Lake Forest 15, Mt. Pleasant 6: Emma Massey tallied seven goals and six assists for the Spartans with Madison Houdek adding two goals and three assists. Giulia Sweet made eight saves.
Boys’ lacrosse
First State Military 14, Red Lion 11: The Bulldogs improved to 7-4 with their second win in a row.
Indian River 19, Lake Forest 9: Reece Stone tallied eight goals and a pair of assists in the Indians’ Henlopen South victory.
IR was also led by Maxwell Forrey (5 goals) and Blake Brightman (4 goals) while Wyatt Snyder made seven saves.
Sussex Academy 16, Woodbridge 6: The Seahawks raised their record to 8-3 with the win.
Cape Henlopen 26, Sussex Tech 0: Mikey Frederick netted four goals while Evan Burris and Thomas Gibbs (1 assist) both added three in the Vikings’ North win.
Fourteen players scored for Cape (8-3), which posted its third shutout of the season.
Girls’ soccer
Caesar Rodney 9, Sussex Tech 0: Elle Davis tallied the Riders’ first three goals in their North win.
Kailyn Maull (2 assists) and Olivia Hudson added two second-goals apiece for CR, which held advantages of 22-4 in shots and 13-1 in corner kicks.
Sussex Central 3, Cape Henlopen 2: Bayleigh Perdue scored three straight goals, including the game-winner in the 60th minute, as the Golden Knights rallied for the North win.
Central goalie Kathy Sanchez Garcia made 23 saves as the Vikings held advantages of 25-9 in shots and 7-1 in corner kicks.
Shannon Rath and Giselle Garcia scored first-half goals for Cape while Brianna Burrell made six saves.
Smyrna 5, Dover 0: Jade Balon (1 assist), Marlayna Pennington (1 assist), Kelly Barr, Abigayle Osborne and Dru Moffett all scored for the Eagles.
Polytech 6, Milford 4: Kylee LaVere netted three goals in the Panthers’ North victory.
Natalie Velazquez (1 assist), Natalie Marlow (1 assist) and Justis Dungee also scored goals for Polytech, which led 4-1 at halftime.
The Buccaneers got three goals from Rylee Metzner.
Indian River 5, Lake Forest 0: Sophia Scurci tallied three goals, including two in the second half, to lead the Indians.
Isabella Scurci (1 assist) and Lilah Hanley also scored for IR, which got four saves from Alexandria Davison. The Indians finished with advantages of 31-16 in shots and 3-11 in corner kicks.
Lake Forest’s Kyra Moyer made 21 saves.
Delmar 11, Seaford 0: The Wildcats netted 10 first-half goals in the Henlopen South victory.
Laurel 2, Woodbridge 1: The Bulldogs scored in overtime to pick up the South win.
Tennis
CR, Cape tied in Henlopen: Caesar Rodney and Cape Henlopen share the team lead after advancing all five entries through the first day of the Henlopen Conference girls’ tennis tournament.
Defending champion Dover is just behind after having four entries reach Saturday’s semifinals in the event, being played at Sea Colony in Bethany.
At first singles, Smyrna’s top-seeded Ava Emrich will face Cape’s Samantha Connors while Dover’s Olivia Anyanwu will take on CR’s Erin Gross in the semis.
The boys’ tournament is now slated to start at 9:30 a.m. on Friday at Sea Colony with the semifinals in both brackets scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. There is rain in the forecast however.
College lacrosse
MEN, Delaware 19, Drexel 6: The top-seeded Blue Hens set a CAA Tournament record for goals in reaching the league title game.
Delaware (10-5) will be bidding for the program’s seventh all-time NCAA Tournament berth and first since 2011 when it faces No. 2 Towson on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Drexel. The Hens are in the CAA finals for the first time since ‘11.
Mike Robinson’s six goals and J.P. Ward’s eight points against the Dragons both tied CAA records.
College basketball
UD men pick up two transfers: Delaware men’s basketball coach Martin Ingelsby announced that transfers Christian Ray and L.J. Owens have joined the program.
Ray, a 6-foot-6 guard, recently finished his third season at La Salle and has two years of eligibility remaining. He led the Explorers with 6.9 rebounds while adding 5.0 points.
Ray scored a season-high 14 points and grabbed a career-best 16 rebounds in the Blue Hens’ 85-82 overtime win over La Salle on Nov. 17.
Owens, a 6-foot-3 guard, spent the last three years at UMBC after playing one season at William & Mary. He has one year of eligibility with the Blue Hens.
Owens averaged 11.3 points last while leading the Retrievers with 67 three-pointers made. A third team All-America East, he reached double figures in 13 of the last 15 contests.
