Local roundup: Riders, Eagles, Knights all win Henlopen North softball matchups

Caesar Rodney High broke open a game that was tied after three innings in posting a 9-3 victory over Milford in Henlopen North softball on Tuesday afternoon.

The Riders (2-0 North, 5-0 overall) outscored the Buccaneers, 7-1, over the last four innings to stay unbeaten.

Lyric Abdul-Rasheed, and Sydney Hatch each had three of CR’s 15 hits in the contest while winning pitcher Peyton Shields threw a four-hitter with six strikeouts and only one walk.

Ashley Bullock and Lauren Dickerson doubled for the Buccaneers.

Smyrna 11, Polytech 10: Pitcher Cimone Edge drove in Gianna Duca with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Eagles.

Haley McCutchan went 3-for-4 with three RBI for Smyrna as the squads combined for 27 hits.

Hannah Megonigal went 4-for-4 with an RBI while Karis Minner drove in five runs for the Panthers, who scored twice in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 10-10.

Sussex Central 1, Dover 0: McKenna Boyle drove in the game’s only run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to give the Golden Knights the Henlopen North win.

Madge Layfield threw a five-hitter with 12 strikeouts for Central.

Lexi Dowdy allowed only four hits for the Senators.

Cape Henlopen 10, Sussex Tech 3: Winning pitcher Abigail Marsh homered for the Vikings, who broke the game open with a six-run third.

Delmar 3, Laurel 1: Ally Marly (2 RBI) and Josie Hollamon both had two hits with Camryn Wingate adding an RBI for the Wildcats.

Winning pitcher Ashlyn Tapman struck out five.

Bulldogs’ pitcher Kylee Hill struck out eight and hit a home run.

Woodbridge 11, Sussex Academy 7: The Blue Raiders scored five runs in the top of the seventh to break a 6-6 tie.

Payton Keeler hit a three-run homer while Kylee Fink, Kamryn Spence, Laura Tatman, and Laney Scott all had multiple hits for Woodbridge.

Caelynn Rees Jorgensen went 2-for-4 for the Seahawks.

Delaware Military 22, First State Military 0: Paige Hollowka had the lone hit for the Bulldogs in the loss.

Baseball

Caesar Rodney 12, Milford 3: The Riders erupted for nine runs in the third inning before stretching their winning streak to three in a row.

Starter Alex Bauer and Andrew Rigby combined to throw a one-hitter, allowing no earned runs with nine strikeouts. Mason Bush had a three-run double, Mason Wrede had three of CR’s 12 hits and Jaxson Monroney added two hits and a pair of RBI.

Mason Morris hit a double for the Bucs.

Sussex Central 12, Dover 2: The Golden Knights shook off an early two-run deficit with five runs in the bottom of the first.

Winning pitcher Brendan Anderson tossed a five-inning four-hitter while Jarrett Wilkins, Anderson and Noah Burroughs all had three hits for Central. Zimir Gardner added two hits and four RBI.

The Senators got a first-inning homer from Hunter Chambers.

Cape Henlopen 3, Sussex Tech 2: The Vikings took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh before holding off the Ravens.

Joshua Reinhold (2-for-4) hit a first-inning homer while Brenn Scott added an RBI single in the fourth. Winning pitcher Nicholas Cox gave up only one run on two hits with seven strikeouts in six and 2/3 innings.

The Ravens got an RBI single from Brock O’Day in the seventh.

Woodbridge 3, Sussex Academy 0: Seth Smart and Will Hague combined on a three-hitter, with nine strikeouts, to earn the shutout.

Lextyn Wescott doubled and scored the Blue Raiders’ first run with Sam Schroeder adding an RBI single.

Elisha Jones allowed only three hits for the Seahawks with Patrick Donahue adding a double.

Caravel 22, Delmarva Christian 6: Carter Breasure (3 RBI), Dylan Briggs and Chester Furmanek all had two hits for the Royals in the loss.

Woodbridge 4, First State Military 3: Lextyn Wescott struck out seven and allowed only three hits in four innings to earn the win for the Blue Raiders.

Woodbridge, which scored all four of its runs in the third inning, also got RBI from Sam Schroeder (2 hits) and Seth Smart.

Preston Shetzler had three hits for the Bulldogs, with a double and an RBI, while Steven Bright had seven strikeouts.

Girls’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 1, Indian River 0: Sarah Cummings scored the game’s only goal in the 30th minute to give the Riders the victory.

Kylee Elliott made 11 saves for CR, which held advantages of 13-12 in shots and 4-3 in corner kicks.

Alexandria Davidson made 12 saves for the Indians. IR won both meetings with the Riders last spring.

Polytech 8, Laurel 0: Natalia Marlow and Kylee LaVere scored twice to spark the Panthers, who led 4-0 at halftime.

Woodbridge 4, Dover 0: The Blue Raiders netted three second-half goals before blanking the Senators.

Sussex Central 9, Seaford 1: Bayleigh Perdue tallied four goals and an assist to pace the Golden Knights.

Marlin Ramirez Velasquez added two goals for Central, which scored eight first-half goals.

Cailee Layton scored for the Blue Jays with Karina Gomez Gaspar making 21 saves.

Delmar 7, Sussex Tech 4: Maci Bradford scored three goals while Baylie Phillips (1 assist) added two to lead the Wildcats.

Lily Baker made eight saves for Delmar, which outshot the Ravens, 12-7.

Ebony Wilson made 10 saves for Sussex Tech, which got goals from four players.

Delmarva Christian 1, Milford 0: Mia Elliott’s goal in the 20th minute lifted the Royals, who got nine saves from Myra Browning.

Boys’ lacrosse

Indian River 13, Milford 10: The Indians outscored the Buccaneers, 5-2, in the fourth quarter to pick up the win on Monday.

Girls’ lacrosse

Milford 15, Sussex Tech 4: The Buccaneers (1-2) registered their first victory of the season.

College baseball

Penn 4, Delaware State 3: The Quakers scored a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to edge the Hornets in a Liberty Bell Classic game.

Delaware State (9-14) scored all its runs in the sixth on a three-run home run from shortstop Trey Paige. Miguel Rivera (Polytech) had two of DSU’s six hits and scored a run.

Penn (18-8) tied the contest with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.

College football

DSU scrimmage canceled: Delaware State has announced that the Hornets’ annual football Red-White spring scrimmage and Junior Day activities scheduled for Saturday have been called off due to health and safety protocols.

“The university has been extremely vigilant in following the advice of our health and safety experts throughout the pandemic,” said DSU athletic director Alecia Shields-Gadson. “We will continue to do all we can to ensure the safety of our student-athletes, staff and visitors to the campus.”

Other sporting events scheduled for this weekend on Delaware State’s main and downtown campuses will go on as scheduled.

The Hornet baseball team has a four-game series against MEAC rival Maryland-Eastern Shore at Bob Reed Field on the downtown campus.

The Delaware State women’s lacrosse team is scheduled to host Coastal Carolina on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Alumni Stadium and the Hornet softball team will welcome Morgan State on Saturday and Sunday for a three-game MEAC series.
