T.J. Mitchell went 3-for-4 with a homerun, a pair of doubles and four RBI as Polytech High rolled to an 11-6 victory over Caesar Rodney in Henlopen Conference baseball on Friday afternoon.
The Panthers led 7-1 in the middle of the fourth inning and 11-3 after scoring three runs in the top of the seventh.
Polytech evened its record at 6-6 after winning for the third time in its last four games. Louis Whittaker and Alex Pingatore also homered while Chase Rebuck and Mitchell Barter had multiple-hit games.
Austin Biddle, Mitchell Barter and Evan Harris combined to pitch a five-hitter.
The Riders, who lost their second straight conference game after an 8-0 start, got a pair of hits from Samuel Ervin.
Cape Henlopen 8, Dover 2: Luke Johnson went 4-for-4 with a homer, three runs scored and four RBI as the Vikings improved to 10-0 in the Henlopen Conference.
Cape, which led 7-0 in the top of the sixth, also got three runs scored from Zach Dale. Austin Elliott (3-0) threw five shutout innings with six strikeouts.
The Senators got a sixth-inning homerun from Chris Dabney.
Sussex Tech 9, St. Mark’s 3: Brayden Graham (2-for-4), Matt Warrington and Tyler Heder (2-for-3) all drove in two runs as the Ravens knocked off the Spartans.
Sussex Tech, which broke open a 1-1 game with five runs in the second, got homers from Jason Genshaw, Grant Lemers and Heder. Winning pitcher Matt Warrington struck out 12 in 6.1 innings.
William Penn 18, Laurel 8: The Colonials topped the Bulldogs in the nonconference matchup.
Indian River 20, Laurel 6: IR was leading only 3-2 before erupting for 10 runs in the third inning on Thursday.
Jason Killen led IR’s 15-hit attack with a homer, double and five RBI. Robert Argo, Cole Hitch and Michael Meehan all had multiple hits.
For Laurel, Holden Deihm went 3-for-3 with a triple, double and four RBI.
Softball
Smyrna 7, Caravel 0: Jessica Anderson pitched a five-hitter to earn the shutout as the Eagles blanked the Buccaneers (10-2).
The victory was the 11th in a row for Smyrna (14-1), which scored three runs in the fifth to open up a 7-0 lead. Julia Thuer drove in three runs while Madison Drummond, Kaelyn Press, and Olivia Smith all contributed multiple hits to the Eagles’ total of 12 hits in the contest.
Dover 6, Cape Henlopen 5: The Senators posted a dramatic Henlopen Conference when Kaila Quick scored from second on Mariah Torres’ infield single in the bottom of the seventh.
The Vikings had tied the contest at 5-5 on Kaniah James’ two-run homer in the top of the seventh.
Lake Forest 4, Red Lion 1: The Spartans scored all four runs in the third inning of the nonconference win.
Winning pitcher Katie Stahre went 3-for-4 while Lexi Stahre and Brooke Glanden (double) added two hits apiece.
Polytech 7, Caesar Rodney 4: The Panthers improved to 7-6 with their sixth win in the last eight games.
Indian River 9, Laurel 2: In a conference game played Thursday, Abigail O’Shields pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts for IR.
Braydee Whitman had a double for IR, which had 12 hits in the contest and led 5-0 in the second inning.
Peyton Givans and Nicole Pattille accounted for the Bulldogs’ hits.
Lacrosse
BOYS, Polytech 17, Concord 4: Zach Trabaudo (1 assist) netted four goals while Patrick O’Brien added three goals and five assists in the Panthers’ victory.
Samuel Slater (2 assists), Joshua Blandino and Chris Rutkoski (1 assist) all scored twice for Polytech, which got goals from nine players.
Christian Brooks made six saves while Jason Connelly won 12 of 17 faceoffs.
Milford 13, Lake Forest 12: The Buccaneers built an 8-5 halftime lead before earning the South victory.
Goalie Sean Gaglione made 24 saves for Milford which got multiple goals from Conor Christie (4 goals), Alex Herka (4 goals, 1 assist) and Landan Hajek (2 goals, 3 assists).
Caesar Rodney 11, Wilm. Charter 4: Jarred Wagenhoffer scored four goals and Noah Longest had three as the Riders improved to 12-0.
James Cava added two goals and a pair of assists with Jacob Stant making four saves.
Delmarva Christian 10, Sussex Academy 7: The Royals scored three unaswered goals in the fourth quarter to post the win.
Hunter Smith netted six goals for Delmarva Christian with Sutton Bennett adding the other four.
The Seahawks got three goals from Chris Smith and two apiece from Grant Thomas and Riley Custodic.
GIRLS, Polytech 20, St. Mark’s 12: Madi McKay netted six goals for the Panthers, who outscored the Spartans, 11-6, in the second half.
Cecilia Carter and MacKenzie Estrada both scored twice while Madison Knight and Holly Rembold both had a goal and an assist.
Smyrna 10, Middletown 7: The Eagles outscored the Cavaliers, 7-2, in the second half to pull out the victory.
Juliana Kolakowski (4 goals), Jessica Bergold (3 goals) and Julie Snow (2 goals) all scored multiple goals for Smyrna with Katelynn Porter making 13 saves.
Wilm. Charter 11, Caesar Rodney 10: The Riders rallied from an 8-4 halftime deficit before falling short.
Noelle Ruggiero (2 assists) tallied three goals for CR with Eibhlin Steele (1 assist), Lillian Ayers (2 assists) and Graycie Bachman all scoring twice.
Boys’ volleyball
Delmarva Christian 3, Conrad 1: The Royals won the first two sets before posting the 25-20, 25-22, 25-27, 25-21 victory.
Delmarva Christian was led by Seth Stevens (4 kills, 3 aces, 39 assists), Evan Timko (17 kills, 2 aces) and Austin Giltner (10 kills).
Conrad 3, Indian River 1: The Red Wolves won the final three sets to down IR, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-22.
College baseball
Elon 6, Delaware 2: The Blue Hens couldn’t hold an early 2-0 lead in the CAA loss.
The Hens (23-22, 7-9 CAA), who put eight of their first 14 batters on base, managed just the two first-inning runs off Elon ace Kyle Brnovich (6-2) who struck out nine batters in seven strong innings.
Junior Kyle Baker went 3-for-4 with a run scored while Kevin Mohollen reached base three times and scored a run.
UMES 4, Delaware State 0: Tyler Hoskins tossed eight shutout innings for the Hawks.
UMES (6-16) pulled to within a game-and-a-half of the Hornets (7-14) for third place in the MEAC North standings. The top three teams qualify for the conference tournament later this month in Ormond Beach, Fla.
The Hornets left 11 runners on base. DSU left at least one stranded on the base paths in all but the fifth inning.
Freshman Cole Garey (Polytech) had two of the Hornets’ seven hits.
College softball
Hens post key sweep: Delaware remained in contention for a CAA Tournament berth with a doubleheader sweep of Elon, 3-1 and 9-4.
The Blue Hens (7-13 CAA, 17-31 overall) have won seven of their last eight games including five straight. Delaware is tied for sixth place in the standings along with the Phoenix (7-13, 24-27).
The Hens need to win today’s noon regular-season finale with Elon and have Charleston defeat UNCW to advance to the CAA Tournament, which will be held Wednesday through Friday at James Madison.
Hampton 2, Delaware State 1: The Pirates scored an extra-inning run on a sacrifice bunt to post the MEAC North win.
Hampton (10-6) is now in sole possession of second place in the division standings, one game ahead of the Hornets (9-7). Delaware State is just ahead of Norfolk State (10-8) and Coppin State (10-8) for third place.
The top four teams in the final standings qualify for the conference championship tournament next week in Ormond Beach, Fla.
College lacrosse
WOMEN, James Madison 17, Delaware 5: The fifth-ranked Dukes cruised past the Blue Hens in a CAA semifinal game.
Senior captain Becky Gohsler had two goals, six draw controls and four caused turnovers for Delaware (8-10). The midfielder wrapped up the season with a program-record 81 draw controls while finishing second with 181 career draw controls.
College swimming
Marmolejo hired as UD coach: Pablo Marmolejo, a former Delaware assistant and Mexican National Team member, will take over the reins of the Blue Hens swimming & diving program.
He was an assistant at UD from 2012-2015 before taking over as the head coach and program director at the Delaware Swim Team, an elite club that earned national recognition over the past three years.
Over the past three years, Marmolejo has managed daily operations of the 350-member Delaware Swim Team, which earned Top-35 national rankings by the USA Swimming’s Club of Excellence Rating program three times. During his time as the head coach and program director, he coached swimmers to the USA National Junior Team, the USA Olympic Trials and the World Championship Trials.
