Local roundup: Polytech, Cape Henlopen earn girls' lacrosse wins

Polytech High built a three-goal halftime lead before downing Padua, 11-8, in girls’ lacrosse on Monday evening.

Madison Todd collected four goals and three assists for the Panthers (5-3), who won for the fifth time in their last six games. Elizabeth Szell added three goals and three assists with Danielle Conn (1 assist) scoring twice.

Polytech outshot the Pandas, 26-16.

Cape Henlopen 19, Caesar Rodney 4: The Vikings bounced back from their first loss of the season with the Henlopen Conference win.

Senior Molly Mendes netted seven goals and an assist for the Vikings (9-1), who led 14-2 at halftime. Maren Buckaloo (2 assists) and Elizabeth Rishko (1 assist) both added three goals for Cape, which got goals from seven players.

The Vikings’ Anna Lopez and Mikaylah Lindsay made three saves apiece.

Elle Roberts scored twice for the Riders with Melissa Dolt making six saves. Cape out-shot CR, 31-10.

Milford 17, Mt. Pleasant 7: Freshman Hannah Zimmerman collected 10 goals and four assists to lead the Buccaneers.

Isabel Betts, an eighth-grader, added three goals and six assists while Bailey Masten (1 assist) and Carley Mackert both scored twice. Madison Stahl made 12 saves.

Indian River 12, St. Georges 6: Kylie Harris netted six goals with Laila Fentn (1 assist) adding three to pace the Indians.

Caylee Schmidt made 10 saves, including the 100th of her career.

Lake Forest 18, Early College 5: The Spartans scored nine runs in each of the first two innings of the Henlopen South victory.

Softball

Indian River 2, Seaford 0: Kinsley Hall fired a four-hitter with four walks and 17 strikeouts in the Indians’ victory.

Samantha Derickson had two of IR’s five hits with Isabelle Wade adding a triple.

Delmar 7, Polytech 1: The Wildcats improved to 5-4 with the win on Monday.

Laurel 6, Sussex Central 5: The Bulldogs scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to edge the Golden Knights on Saturday.

Central scored three times in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead only to have Laurel tie the score with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Makenzie Whaley homered while Ashlyn Ullman had two of the Bulldogs’ five doubles.

Kaylee Verosko hit a homer for the Golden Knights with Kate Evick doubled twice.

Sussex Central 4, Middletown 0: Mya Jones, who homered, and Takyla Davis had two hits apiece in the Golden Knights’ first game on Saturday.

Winning pitcher Madge Layfield tossed a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts.

Boys’ lacrosse

Dover 18, William Penn 1: The Senators (4-5) picked up their second win in a row.

Parkside, Md. 17, Smyrna 6: The Eagles fell to 3-5 with the non-conference loss.

Delmar 19, Sussex Central 3: The Wildcats raised their record to 4-6 with the win.

Gunston, Md. 7, Lake Forest 3: Gunston handed the Spartans a non-conference loss.

Wilm. Charter 19, First State Military 8: The Bulldogs (5-4) had a four-game winning streak snapped with the loss.

Baseball

Indian River 6, Seaford 2: The Indians scored the final six runs of the Henlopen South matchup to overcome an early deficit.

Roman Keith went 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBI for IR while Benjamin Cordrey had two hits. Reliever Chance Hocker gave up only one hit and struck out 10 in five innings.

Delmarva Christian 12, Sussex Academy 2: Tommy Obertubbesing had a home run and double to pace the Royals, who took the lead for good with four runs n the bottom of the first.

Winning pitcher Dylan Briggs struck out five with no walks in six innings while Kasey Bell, Chet Furmanek, Carter Breasure and Dylan Briggs all had two hits.

Wesley McLaughlin had an RBI single in the first for the Seahawks.

Delmar 14, Holly Grove Christian, Md. 0,: The Wildcats won their second in a row to improve to 6-3.

Boys’ volleyball

Cape Henlopen 3, ASPIRA 0: The Vikings (9-2) won the match by scores by scores of 25-9, 25-17, 25-14.

Brady Lamb had 10 kills for Cape, Odin DeLazaro Potemski had four kills and seven aces with Ethan Shuttleworth adding three aces and 22 assists.

College lacrosse

DelTech takes top regional seed: The Delaware Tech men’s lacrosse team (9-4) earned the top seed in the four-team NJCAA Region 19/North Atlantic District Tournament.

It is the first time DelTech has qualified for the tournament since 2018.

The semifinal game will pit DelTech against fourth-seeded Union County on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the DE Turf Sports Complex. DelTech defeated Union, 27-5, during the regular season.

The championship game is slated for noon on Sunday, May 1 at DE Turf against the winner of the semifinal game between Mercer County and Nassau.

DelTech set a school record with 222 goals in 13 games. Sophomore Conor Christie (Milford) led NJCAA in scoring with 54 goals, and in total points with 83.

Sophomore Jack Dennis (Cape Henlopen) was second (48 goals, 72 points) while freshman Brandon Tice (Lake Forest) was third (42 goals). Freshman goalie Caleb Secrist (Lake Forest) finished in the Top 10 in NJCAA with a 52.1 save percentage.

Hens’ Kurtz honored: Delaware men’s lacrosse senior attacker Tye Kurtz has been named the CAA Player of the Week after netting a career-high eight goals and an assist in the Blue Hens’ 16-15 win over Drexel.

Kurtz’ eight goals are the most scored in the CAA this season and match the second-most in a game in league history.

College baseball

Coppin State 18, Delaware State 6: With the MEAC contest tied 5-5 after two innings, the Eagles scored 13 of the game’s next 14 runs on Sunday.

Miguel Rivera (Polytech) went 3-for-3 game, including a solo homer in the second. Brady Daniels also had three hits.

UNCW 11, Delaware 8: The Seahawks scored six runs in the top of the first inning and held off the Blue Hens on Sunday.

J.J. Freeman, Jake Dunion, Aidan Kane and Joey Loynd each finished with two hits at the plate for Delaware (6-6 CAA, 22-16 overall), with Joseph Carpenter driving in three.

College softball

Delaware 8, Hofstra 6: The Blue Hens (11-4 CAA, 28-14 overall) win its fourth-straight CAA series on Sunday and became the first team to clinch a spot in the CAA Tournament.

Halle Kisamore had three hits and two runs scored while Emily Blum added two hits. Freshman Graceyn Frost picked up her 13th win in the circle.

Hornets drop two: Norfolk State completed a three-game series sweep of Delaware State with 3-2 and 13-2 victories over the Hornets (3-14 MEAC, 4-28 overall) on Sunday.

College bowling

Hornets pull off upset: A victory over recently-crowned NCAA champion McKendree highlighted Delaware State’s appearance at the USBC Women’s National Championship Tournament in Addison, Ill., this weekend.

Competing as the No. 16 seed in the 16-team double-elimination tournament, the Hornets opened the competition by shocking top-seed McKendree, 4-1, in a first-round match.

But DelState dropped its next two matches, 4-3, to Pikesville and 4-2 to Mount St. Mary’s, to end its tournament run and season.
