Local roundup: Polytech boys finish unbeaten in North

Dorell Little netted 28 points as Polytech High edged Milford, 72-70, in boys’ basketball on Monday night to finish unbeaten in the Henlopen North.

The Panthers (14-0 North, 15-3 overall) out-scored the Buccaneers, 25-21, in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory. Xavier Brewington and Brett Shelton-Hoskins both added 12 points for Polytech.

The Panthers, who still have two non-conference contests remaining, play Henlopen South champion Seaford in the Henlopen Conference championship game on Feb. 25. The contest is slated for 1 p.m. at Dover High.

Jayden Norman (19), Neysen Legros (15) and Ethan Wilkins (14) paced Milford.

Caesar Rodney 82, Woodbridge 78, OT: The Riders out-lasted Woodbridge in overtime on Monday night.

The Blue Raiders out-scored the Riders, 22-13, in the fourth quarter to send the game to OT tied at 70-70. But CR then out-scored Woodbridge, 12-8, in overtime to take the victory.

Senior Steven Smith collected 26 points, eight rebounds and four blocks for the Riders while Anthony Aglio added 17 points and nine rebounds. Khalil Kemp contributed 13 points and four steals for CR (8-11), which won its second game in a row.

Bruce Mosley netted 26 points for Woodbridge.

Sussex Central 65, Delmarva Christian 39: The Golden Knights went on an 18-5 in the third quarter to take control.

Seaford 80, Delcastle 56: The Blue Jays used a 19-9 second-quarter run to break open the win on Saturday.

Brent Ricketts (20), Aviyon Matthews (18), Kashmier Wise (16), Makel Hubbard (11) and Careen Bolden (10) all scored in double figures.

Odyssey Charter 89, Sussex Academy 43: The Seahawks dropped a non-conference decision to Odyssey on Monday.

Odessa 57, First State Military 21: The Ducks leed 27-7 bay halftime in the non-conference win.

Girls’ basketball

Caravel 67, Delmarva Christian 44: The Buccaneers led by nine at halftime before pulling away in the second half

Senior Ainsley Bell, who recently scored her 1,000th point, scored 23 points with six rebounds and five blocked shots for Delmarva Christian.

Smyrna 68, Sussex Central 16: The Eagles out-scored the Golden Knights, 33-1, in the second half to close out the North victory.

Kai Burnette had 21 points for Smyrna, Amiyah Ellerbe scored 15 and Skylar Curley added 10.

Wrestling

DIAA tourney pairings set: Six Henlopen Conference teams, including four in Divsiion, have made the fields for the DIAA dual-meet wrestling state tournaments.

The tourney begins on Wednesday night with the semifinals and finals being held on Saturday at Smyrna. The higher-seeded teams will host the first-round matches at 7 p.m.

Henlopen North champion Sussex Central (20-0) is the top seed in Division I and will host No. 8 Wilmington Charter (4-3) on Wednesday. In other quarterfinal matches, No. 2 Cape Henlopen (17-4) will host No. 7 St. Georges (9-7), No. 3 Caesar Rodney (10-2) hosts No. 6 Smyrna (10-9) and No. 4 Salesianum (8-3) hosts No. 5 William Penn (13-3).

The Division I semifinals are slated for 4 p.m. on Saturday at Smyrna with the finals to follow at about 6 p.m.

In Division II, No. 5 Laurel (9-4) — the Henlopen South champion — will go to No. 4 St. Mark’s (9-2) with No. 6 Lake Forest (9-7) going to No. 3 Tower Hill (13-3) in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Top-seeded Caravel (7-5) hosts No. 8 McKean (10-3) and No. 2 Delaware Military (8-4) hosts No. 7 Red Lion Christian (4-3) in the other matches on Wednesday.

The Division II semifinals will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Smyrna with the finals at 6 p.m.

College basketball

MEN, Norfolk State 97, Delaware State 58: The Spartans won their 15th game in a row over the Hornets.

The Spartans (7-2 MEAC, 18-7 overall) won their fourth straight game while Delaware State (3-6 MEAC, 5-19 overall) dropped its second in a row.

O’Koye Parker continued his recent hot streak for Delaware State, coming off the bench to score a team-high 19 points, highlighted by four three-pointers on six attempts. Parker has tallied 59 points and 11 three-pointers (on 16 attempts) in the last three games.

Martaz Robinson scored in double-figures for the seventh straight game with 12 points (8-of-9 FT), while Raymond Somerville added 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds for the Hornets.

WOMEN, Charleston 90, Delaware 56: The Blue Hens fell to 6-6 CAA, 13-10 overall with the loss on Sunday.

Makayla Pippin paced Delaware with 18 points and seven rebounds. Tara Cousins followed with 11 points (3-for-5 3PT), six rebounds, four assist and three steals while Jewel Smalls chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.

Norfolk State 70, Delaware State 42: The Hornets lost their fourth game in a row to fall to 2-7 MEAC, 4-16 overall.

College softball

Houston 1, Delaware 0: The Blue Hens (4-1) suffered their first loss of the season after the Cougars scored a sixth-inning run on Sunday.

Emily Winburn fired a complete game in the circle, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out two. Hanna Garber led the UD offense with three hits, including a double.
