Fifth-seeded Caravel knocked off No. 1 St. Elizabeth, 67-58, in the DIAA girls’ basketball state semifinals on Wednesday night.
The Buccaneers will face second-seeded Sanford in the state championship game on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Carpenter Center. Sanford beat defending state champion Conrad, 52-41, in Wednesday’s first state semifinal.
Caravel (15-8) never trailed after taking a 21-15 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Vikings closed within five points a few times in the fourth quarter before the Buccaneers tallied the contest’s final four points.
Sasha Marvel (18), Karli Cauley (16) and Kendra Warren (11) all finished in double figures for Caravel. Marvel went 12-for-12 from the foul line as the Bucs finished 27-of-33 on free throws.
Ber’Nyah Ward-Mayo had a game-high 21 points for St. Elizabeth (19-4) with Juliann McCarron adding 11.
In the first semifinal, Sanford led only 46-41 with 2:09 remaining before finishing the game on a 6-0 run. Trailing 19-18 with two minutes left in the second quarter, Sanford also ran off nine straight points to go up 27-19 at intermission.
Lauren Park had a team-high 17 points and six assists for the Warriors (19-4) while Allie Kubek added 12 points and 18 rebounds. Olivia Tucker scored 13 points, going 6-for-6 from the foul line.
As a team, Sanford went 13-of-14 on free throws, including 10-of-10 shooting in the second half.
Stefanie Kulesza netted a game-high 19 for points for Conrad (17-6) with her sister, Julie, scoring 10. Ja’Nylah Whittlesey collected seven points and 12 rebounds.
College lacrosse
MEN, Delaware 10, Mercer 9: Charlie Kitchen’s goal with just under four minutes remaining broke a 9-9 tie and lifted the Blue Hens (5-1).
Kitchen tied a career-high with five goals to extend his goal-scoring streak to 23 straight games. The junior now has 80 career goals, which moved him into the top-25 all-time in program history.
Freshman Tye Kurtz and junior Bryce Reid each had a goal and two assists as the Blue Hens fired off 60 shots on goal, the most since Delaware ripped off 61 against Villanova in 2016.
Defensively, Delaware allowed just two second-half goals, forcing 18 turnovers, 11 of which came in the second half.
Junior Matt DeLuca registered his 20th career double-digit save performance in 34 games with 17 saves, which brought his career total to 387, which ranks 10th all-time in program history.
William Peace 14, Wesley 2: Leo Kelley and Kyle Mackall-Lloyd both tallied second-quarter goals for the Wolverines in the loss. Dylan Sicca stopped eight shots in 42 minutes.
WOMEN, Wesley 18. Sweet Briar 1: Fallon Fore and Paige Brehm each notched six goals for the Wolverines (2-0) in their victory.
Brehm registered three assists, three caused turnovers, three ground balls and two draw controls. Fore scooped up five ground balls, won four draws, caused four turnovers and assisted on two or Brehm’s goals.
College football
Hens add Legg to staff: Delaware has added veteran assistant Dave Legg to its football coaching staff.
Legg, spent the past 12 seasons at Richmond, including five with current Blue Hen head coach Danny Rocco. He’ll work with the Blue Hens’ defensive staff.
Among his coaching highlights have been helping to lead William and Mary to back-to-back successes in the 1992 Epson Ivy Bowl and 1993 Yankee Conference Championship, and Bucknell to the 1996 Patriot League Championship. Additionally, Legg helped coach Christopher Newport to five conference championships within six years.
College softball
Wesley splits two: Wesley College split two games in Myrtle Beach on Wednesday, blanking King’s, Pa., 6-0 before dropping a 7-6 decision to Wilkes.
Against King’s, Dori Loukopoulos scattered eight hits and six walks while striking out three in 5.1 innings. Abbey Mayse pitched the final 1.2 innings, giving up only one lone hit to seal the shutout.
Megan DiRubbio, Ashley Royer, Brooke Retkowski and Amanda Curry all recorded two hits.
Against Wilkes, Brandi Dalious (Polytech) was 3-for-3 with five RBI but Wilkes stifled a seventh-inning rally by Wesley to escape with the win.
Ashley Royer had two hits and three runs while Dori Loukopoulos added two hits and a run.
College golf
Hens’ Klotz honored: Delaware junior Ariane Klotz was named the Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Golfer of the Week.
Klotz finished in third place at the UNF Collegiate this week after carding a four-under par 67-71-74-212 on the par 72, 5,926-yard Jacksonville Golf and Country Club course. Her opening round 67 tied for the lowest single round in program history.
