No. 10 Lake Forest High knocked off seventh-seeded Indian River, 4-1, in the first round of the DIAA softball state tournament on Monday afternoon.
The victory puts the Spartans (13-6) in today’s state quarterfinals where they will play at No. 2 Smyrna at 4 p.m.
Lake Forest lost to the Eagles, 3-1, on April 23. Monday’s win was the Spartans’ second victory over the Indians (13-6) this season.
Lake Forest lost to IR in the second round of last year’s state tourney.
Sussex Central 11, St. Georges 1: The No. 8 Golden Knights downed the ninth-seeded Hawks in six innings on Monday.
Central (14-5) will play at top-seeded Caravel today at 5 p.m. in the state quarterfnals.
Delmar 2, Newark Charter 0: The No. 12 Wildcats blanked the fifth-seeded Patriots in the first-round contest.
Delmar (12-7) goes to No. 4 Appoquinimink today for a 4 p.m. game in the quarterfinals.
Caravel 11, Milford 1: The top-seeded Buccaneers scored four runs in the second inning to break a 1-1 tie in the first-round win over the No. 16 Buccaneers.
Caravel hosts Sussex Central today at 5 p.m. in the state quarterfinals.
Defending state champion Milford was limited to only two hits in the five-inning contest, both from Darby Brennan.
Baseball
St. Mark’s 9, Cape Henlopen 7: The Spartans scored three runs in the fifth to overcome a 7-5 deficit and hand the Vikings only their third loss of the season.
Zach Dale had a three-run triple to spark a six-run fourth for Cape (15-3) in its regular-season finale.
Dover 9, Delaware Military 2: The Senators used a five-run fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie in the nonconference contest.
Alec Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI for Dover with Noah Lanouette adding a three-run homerun, Winning pitcher Dominic Velazquez struck out eight in six-plus innings.
Archmere 4, Polytech 1: The Panthers finished the regular season with a record of 10-8 after the nonconference loss.
Indian River 8, Lake Forest 6: Jacob Anderson (2 RBI) and Tyler Kramer had two hits apiece for IR, which rallied from an early 3-0 deficit.
Brock Wingate also drove in a pair of runs for the Indians.
The Spartans were led by Nate McGray, who had three hits and three RBI. Gabe Martin, Jaden Rivera, Tyler Chalmers, and Coleman Morris all added two hits to Lake Forest’s total of 13 hits in the contest.
Seaford 10, Laurel 9: Jacob Walridge’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh gave the Blue Jays the walkoff conference win.
Seaford, which scored three runs altogther in the seventh, got multiple hits from Tyler Harris, Zach Adams and Christian Chandler. Reliever Aaron Burtelle pitched five innings to earn the victory.
Dalton Perdue, who homered, and Jose Borerro had three hits each for the Bulldogs.
William Penn 6, Woodbridge 1: The Colonials led only 2-1 before scoring four runs in the sixth.
Brock Keeler drove in Woodbridge’s run with a first-inning triple while pitcher Dylan Layton struck out eight in five and a third innings.
St. Thomas More 12, DE Public Safety & Security 2: The Ravens (1-9) picked up their first win of the season.
Appoquinimink 6, Woodbridge 0: Krew Bouldin, Lorenzo Carrier and Mason Keene combined to throw a one-hitter with nine strikeouts for the Jaguars.
Boys’ volleyball
Delmarva Christian 3, Indian River 0: The Royals downed IR by scores of 27-25, 25-20, 25-21.
Leading the Indians were Michael Barnes (16 kills, 1 ace, 11 digs), Mitchell McGee (11 kills, 4 blocks) and Alexander Canseco Castro (7 digs, 24 assists).
College track & field
Ten Wolverines qualify for NCAAs: Ten Wesley College track & field athletes qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The meet begins on May 24 at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Six Wesley men qualified for the national meet. Thomas Kalieta Jr. qualified for the 400-meter dash and as part of the 4x400-meter relay.
Kalieta is the second seed in the 400 with a qualifying time of 47.01 seconds.
TySean Cousar, John Heriot and Dominic McAnulty join Kalieta on the fifth-ranked 4x400-meter relay team. It is the third NCAAs that McAnulty has competed in.
Roland Attoh-Okine returns to the NCAAa for the fourth time as the 14th seed in the 110-meter hurdles. Attoh-Okine is a three-time All-American, twice in the indoor 60-meter hurdles and at last year’s outdoor championships after a fifth-place finish in the hurdles in 2017.
Tre’ Johnson qualified as the 17th seed in the triple jump with a mark of 14.63 meters (48-0).
The quartet of Briana Artis, Evelina Sloboh, Rakiya Taylor and Maysha Foster represents the Wesley women’s team in the 4x100-meter relay as the fourth seed. It is the fifth time Artis has qualified for an NCAA championship and the second trip to nationals for Sloboh.
Artis is a four-time All-American in the 4x400-meter relay.
