Canal Little League came up one inning short of the Little League World Series.
The Delaware state champions were leading New Jersey headed into the final at-bat of Friday's Mid-Atlantic Regional, but a furious rally lifted New Jersey to a 6-3 win.
Canal entered the final inning on top 3-1. New Jersey earned its five runs in the inning a sacrifice fly, a RBI single and a three-run double.
Matt Rice led Canal with a home run and a RBI double while Logan Waynick drove in the other run. Brody Fleming pitched the first five innings for Canal, holding New Jersey to one run before he was removed after one batter in the sixth due to the 85-pitch limit.
This year’s Little League World Series is being played without international teams because of the COVID pandemic. Instead, the top two teams in each U.S. regional will make the field for the tournament in Williamsport, Pa.
The only Delaware teams to play in the Little League World Series were Naamans in 2003 and Newark National in 2013.
Canal had won two games in a row after falling to New Jersey, 3-0, in its Mid-Atlantic opener on Sunday.

The most successful doubles players of all time, the Bryans are coming to the Dave Marshall Tennis Facility in Lewes on Aug. 28 and to the Talbot Country Club in Easton on Aug. 29. The appearances are part of their Bryan Brothers Fantasy Clinic, a post-retirement tour across the country.
The Bryans’ coach, Dr. Dave Marshall, will show participants what it takes to train like the Bryans and players will test their skills with the Bryans during morning and afternoon clinics. Each participant will get a courtside lunch and Q&A session with the Bryans and coaches, along with photographs and autographs.

Guests can also purchase Spectator Seats for $250, which includes an opportunity to sit on the court and watch the clinics, as well as attend the lunch with the Bryans, Q&A session and get photographs and autographs.
The clinics raise funds for the Big Fish Charitable Foundation, Big Fish Cares, to start a new after-school tennis program for youth in need in Talbot and Sussex counties.
