Local roundup: MOT gets past Milford to take Major baseball District I title

MOT edged Milford, 3-2, to capture the District I Major League baseball title on Friday night.

Spencer Flayhart’s RBI single broke a 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning to give MOT the walk-off win.

The Middletown-Odessa-Townsend all-stars finished 4-0 in the tournament in Little League’s age division for 11-12 year olds.

MOT starting pitcher Gavin Thomas allowed five runs and two hits while striking out nine in 4.1 innings. A home run from Lee Santoro (2-for-3) gave Middletown a 2-1 lead in the fifth.

MOT, which allowed a total of only five runs in its four games, advances to the state tournament, which starts on Wednesday at Newark National.

The district championship was the first for MOT since 2019 (there was no tourney in 2020) but its 23rd overall.

Milford finished 3-2 in the tournament, losing twice to MOT by a score of just 6-3.

East Regional

Rhode Island 5, Georgetown 4: Rhode Island edged Georgetown in nine innings on Friday to oust the Delaware state champions.

The contest was tied 4-4 when Rhode Island scored on a sacrifce fly in the bottom of the ninth. Georgetown finished 1-2 in the tournament being played in Bangor, Maine.

American Legion

Stahl Post-30 11, Fox Post-2 1: Top-seeded Stahol Post scored seven runs in the first two innings before downing Dover’s Fox Post in the opening round of the American Legion state tournament on Saturday.

Fourth-seeded Fox Post (5-7) will take on No. 3 Delvets (8-7) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Wilson Field ine then four-team tourney.

Fox Post was limited to a pair of first-inning singles in the five-inning game. Alec Rodriguez drove in Connor Strause as Fox Post took an early 1-0 lead.

Stahl Post pitcher Michael Lane struck out eight.

Junior League

East Regional

MOT 15, New York 0: The Delaware state champions improved to 2-1 in the tournament with the victory on Saturday in Orange, Conn.

MOT took control from the start with a seven-run first inning. Nine players scored a run while Tori McFarland, Savanah Arnold, Gracie Riccio and Samantha Stokes all had multiple hits.

Stokes pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts to earn the four-inning shutout.

On Sunday, MOT faces Maryland at 4 p.m.

Pennsylvania 9, MOT 8: The Middeletown-area squad dropped the one-run decision on Friday.

Kira Brown hit a three-run homer for MOT, which had 12 hits in Friday’s contest. Samantha Stokes and Brown had three hits apiece with Savanah Arnold adding two.

Mid-Atlantic Regional

Georgetown 8, Pennsylvania 3: The Delaware state champions erupted for five fifth-inning runs to break a 3-3 tie in their regional opener on Saturday in Bristol, Conn.

Georgetown advances to a Sunday matchup with New Jersey at 1 p.m.
Braelyn Hellens had a two-run single in the fifth for Georgetown, which was also led by Adeline Lutz (2-for-4, 3 RBI), Karly Kruger (3-for-3, 1 run) and Lauren Myers (2-for-2, 2 runs, 1 RBI). Eight players contributed to Georgetown’s total of 13 hits in the contest.

Makayla Eikenberry pitched a six-hitter with three strikeouts and only one walk.

8-10 tournament

MOT 11, Cape 2: Middletown won its third-straight game to win the state title on Saturday night.

The championship sends MOT to the East Regional, which starts on July 30 in Pittston, Pa.

Winning pitcher Aubrey Martin threw a four-hitter while striking out 12 in six innings. Martin and Grace Overby had three hits apiece while Ella Austin homered.

MOT 3, Cape 0: The District I champions forced a second game for the state title with the victory on Friday night.

Aubrey Martin pitched pitched the shutout for MOT after allowing only two hits while striking out 13 with no walks. Brynleigh Bennett and Ella Austin both had two hits while Loghan Smoke, Gia Gambino, and Molly Frantz each added one.

Gambino had the only RBI of the contest.

Mikayla Pollard had both of Cape’s hits in the game.

Pennsylvania 8, Camden-Wyoming 4: The Delaware state champions dropped their opener in Worcester, Mass. on Saturday.

Camden-Wyoming has two games on Sunday, taking on New York at 9 a.m. and then New Jersey at 2 p.m.

College basketball

Hornets pick up player: Jevin Muniz. a 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Bethlehem, Pa., has verbally committed to the Delaware State men’s basketball program.

As a senior in 2021, Muniz averaged 21.6 points, 8.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists in leading Executive Education Academy Charter School to a 20-5 record.

College softball

UD gives Steele contract extension: University of Delaware athletic director Chrissi Rawak has announced a contract extension through the 2027 season for softball coach Jen Steele.

Steele recently completed her fourth season at the helm of the Blue Hens’ softball program and owns a 95-58 overall record. Delaware has had a winning record in each of the past three seasons including a 19-4 record during the shortened 2020 season and a 25-9 mark in 2021 when UD advanced to the CAA Tournament finals for the first time since 2004.

Steele was named the CAA Coach of the Year after she and her coaching staff led the Blue Hens to the program’s first-ever CAA regular-season championship in 2022. The squad went 29-16 overall, including three wins over Power Five opponents (Purdue, N.C. State, Penn State) during the first five weeks of the season.
