Local roundup: MOT, Georgetown softball teams both earn regional wins

MOT rolled to a 15-1 win over Rhode Island to reach the semifinals of the Eastern Regional in Junior League softball on Monday.

The Delaware state champions are now 3-2 in the tournament being played in Orange, Conn.

MOT will play Pennsylvania on Tuesday at 9 a.m. for the right to play for the regional championship. The finals are a best-of-three series scheduled for Wednesday.

Mid-Atlantic Regional

Georgetown 24, Washington, D.C. 0: The Delaware state champions scored 12 runs in each of their two at-bats to improve to 2-1 on Monday in Bristol, Conn.
Georgetown (2-1) will face either Pennsylvania or New York on Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Caroline Holston led Georgetown by going 3-for-3 with two runs and five RBI. Lily Hazzard (2-for-3, runs) added three RBI while Makayla Eikenberry and Emma Jackson all drove in two.

Kenni Blades scored four runs for Georgetown, which had 15 hits in the contest. Blades, whoch struck out six, and Karly Kruger combined to pitch a two-hit shutout.

New Jersey 6, Georgetown 2: Georgetown suffered the loss to New Jersey on Sunday.

Georgetown led 2-1 before New Jersey scored five runs isn the top of the sixth inning.

Adeline Lutz had a hit and an RBI for Georgetown with Karly Kruger (1 hit) and Lil Hazzard scoring runs. Pitcher Makayla Eikenberry allowed only three hits and struck out five in 5.1 innings.

Senior League

East Regional

Maryland 13, Camden-Wyoming 7: The Kent County squad fell to 1-3 in the tournament with the loss on Monday in Worcester, Mass.

Camden-Wyoming picked up its first victory before splitting a pair of games on Sunday.

The Delaware state champions beat New York, 9-5, before falling to New Jersey, 9-2, in the regional bieng played in Worcester, Mass.

Baseball

Junior League

Camden-Wyoming 10, Brandywine 3: The District I champions opened the state tournament with a win on Monday night.

Camden-Wyoming will play in the championship game on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Milford. Millsboro and Brandywine square off on Tuesday in the losers’ bracket.

The state champion advances to the East Regional in Freehold, N.J.

In Monday’s win, winning pitcher Dennis Wilson allowed just one hit and struck out eight in 5.1 innings. Offensively, Parker White (2 hits) and Nate Gatti (double) both had two RBI.

American Legion

Delvets 12, Fox Post-2 9: Dover’s Fox Post rallied from a seven-run first-inning defecit before being eliminated from the state tournament on Sunday.

Fox Post trailed only 8-6 after scoring five runs in the top of the fifth and 10-8 in the sixth before falling short. Fox Post out-hot DelVets, 10-9.

Daniel Blair (2-for-3) had three RBI, Griffin Tracy and Sir Bauer both drove in two runs and Kole Turner (2-for-2) scored twice.

College volleyball

DSU pair earn award: Delaware State women’s volleyball coach Bruce Atkinson and Hornets’ middle blocker Alondra Maldonado are among nearly 80 recipients of a Historically Black College and University Makeda Excellence Award.

Atkinson is the Makeda national award winner for women’s volleyball coach for the 2021-22 academic year. The reigning Mid-Eastern Coach of the Year, he led the Hornets to a share of the MEAC regular-season title for the first time since 1987 and a team record 26 wins (26-5).

Maldonado is the Makeda national award honoree for women’s volleyball athlete. A 2021 All-MEAC first-team and MEAC All-Tournament selection, she was second in the league in kills at 3.15 per set, seventh in hitting percentage (.298), and ninth in blocks (0.76 per set).

College football

UD’s Pitts on Good Works list: Delaware wide receiver Thyrick Pitts has been named one of the nominees for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. Pitts is one of 114 nominees across all divisions of college football.

An All-CAA first-team selection in 2021, Pitts led the Blue Hens wide receivers for the third-straight year to earn his second all-conference nod. He finished with team highs of 43 receptions for 669 yards and he ranked fourth in the CAA with seven touchdown receptions.

Pitts, who is currently pursuing his MBA, has been a member of the Delaware SAAC Committee and was a part of the university’s COVID Project Working Group. Pitts is also involved in several service organizations that give back to the community like UDance and the B+ Foundation, Reps 4 Kids and Be the Match.

In the classroom, Pitts is a two-time member of the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll and a four-time selection to the Dean’s List. He was named to the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.

College basketball

Four Hens earn academic honor: Fred Rullo IV, Davis Long, Aleks Novakovich, and Dylan Painter have been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court, the organization announced.

To be recognized with this honor, a student-athlete must be listed on a school’s varsity roster, academically a junior, senior or graduate student, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
