Former Caesar Rodney High wrestler Trey Mitchell has been named the Riders’ new head wrestling coach.

He replaces Dan Rigby, who stepped down earlier this month after coaching the Riders for the past seven seasons.

Since 2016, Mitchell was Rigby’s assistant coach and the program’s junior varsity head coach. He also worked with the Young Riders and Henlopen Hammers programs as well as serving on the Delaware USA Wrestling Board.

A 2012 CR grad, Mitchell was a four-year letter winner and team captain at McDaniel College. He currently teaches at the Kent Elementary Intensive Learning Center at W.B. Simpson Elementary.

Boys’ volleyball

Cape Henlopen 3, Smyrna 0: The Vikings picked up a 25-13, 26-24, 25-19 win in the first meeting between the two programs.

Odin DeLazaro Potemski had 12 kills and two aces for Cape Henlopen (3-0) with Alexander Patterson adding 10 kills and three aces. Ethan Shuttleworth had 29 assists.

Indian River 3, ASPIRA 0: The Indians improved to 3-0 with the 25-5, 25-11, 25-15 victory.

Brandywine 3, Sussex Academy 0: Zachary Yenovkian had four kills and three aces for the Seahawks in the 25-14, 25-12, 27-25 loss.

Boys’ lacrosse

Cape Henlopen 13, Episcopal, Pa. 10: Hank D’Ambrogi netted six goals and an assist to pace the Vikings in their season opener.

Luke Burton added three goals for Cape Henlopen, which led 9-3 at halftime. Evan Erhardt made nine saves while C.J. Fritchman won 14 faceoffs.

Girls’ lacrosse

Sussex Academy 19, Caravel 2: Sanne Elling, Annabella Guckes, Marley Rohe and Macy Steinwedel all tallied three goals for the unbeaten Seahawks (3-0).

Peyton Hagy made seven saves for Sussex Aademy, which has allowed just four goals this season.

Girls’ soccer

Cape Henlopen 2, Conrad 1: Giselle Garcia and Josephine Ingerski tallied first-half goals as the Vikings (3-1) won their third-straight one-goal decision.

Brianna Burrell made nine saves as Cape out-shot Conrad, 14-10.

College baseball

Delaware 11, James Madison 5: Dominic Ragazzo reached base in all five plate appearances and set a UD single-game record with six stolen bases in the Blue Hens’ CAA victory on Sunday.

Ragazzo finished 3-for-3 with two walks, scoring two runs and driving home a pair for Delaware (1-2 CAA, 11-10 overall). J.J. Freeman and Nick Vera both added two hits on the day, while Joseph Carpenter knocked home three runs.

Blue Hen reliever Zach Klapak improved to 3-0 after allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings, while Mike Biasiello picked up his fourth save as he scattered three hits and struck out seven in 3.2 scoreless frames.

DelTech earns sweep: The Delaware Tech baseball team raised its record 22-1 after sweeping Raritan Valley, 6-2 and 14-1 on Sunday.

Leading DelTech offensively are first baseman Matt Rodriguez (Delmar), batting .514 with 37 hits, six home runs, and 29 RBI; second baseman Chase Boyle (Sussex Central), batting .426 with 26 hits and 15 RBI; and catcher Ethan Watkinson (Sussex Central), batting .357 with 25 hits, four home runs, and 20 RBI.

Three DelTech pitchers are undefeated: Cade Williams. 5-0 with a 1.63 ERA; Zach Hart (St. Georges), 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA and Riley Culver (Delmarva Christian), 5-0 with a 3.38 ERA.

College softball

Delaware State 7, South Carolina State 3: The Hornets (2-5 MEAC, 3-18 overall) scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on Sunday to take two of the three games in the MEAC series.

Jonah Cunnigan singled in a sixth inning run to give the Hornets a 5-3 lead and Jaelyn Baker doubled in two more later in the at bat for insurance. In the fourth, DSU gotma two-run pinch-hit double from Alexis Roberson.

College bowling

Hornets fall in MEAC finals: Delaware State’s bid for its first MEAC championship since 2016 ended in the title match with a 3-0 loss to North Carolina A&T.

The Hornets’ Saralyne Nassberg and Stefanny Toala were named to the MEAC All-Tournament Team.

DelState could receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row. The Hornets have already qualified for the USBC national team tournament championship this year.

College equestrian

DSU’s Ridgely honored: Delaware State’s Jennifer Ridgely has earned her third career conference Coach of the Year award.

This season, the Hornets rose as high as No. 7 in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association poll, and currently stand at No. 10.
