Special To The Delaware State News/Gary EmeighAlbert Casabella scored 18 points to lead Milford High to a 75-31 victory over Sussex Academy in the Buccaneers’ boys’ basketball season opener on Thursday night.
Daniel Shockley added 12 and Jaxson Turner had eight points for Milford.
Laurel 62, Seaford 56: Ethan Lambert scored 34 points for the Blue Jays but they suffered a Henlopen Conference Southern Divison defeat to Laurel.
The Bulldogs improved to 4-0 on the year.
Girls’ basketball

Three Hens earn ECAC awards: Redshirt freshman linebacker Colby Reeder was selected as the ECAC Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Defensive Rookie of the Year while junior safety Nasir Adderley was named first team All-East and senior defensive tackle Bilal Nichols was honored as a second team All-East selection.

Special To The Delaware State News/Gary EmeighThe teams were selected by a vote of ECAC member head coaches and nominations were open to conference first team selections in the Colonial Athletic Association, Ivy League, Patriot League, Northeast Conference, and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Reeder, who last month was named the CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year, becomes the ninth UD player to earn All-East Rookie of the Year notice and first since linebacker Jeff Williams in 2012.
Track and field
Henlopen teams compete at Snow Hill: At the first meet of the winter track and field season at Snow Hill High in Maryland on Wednesday, Riana Miller of Lake Forest earned six points and third place in shot put with a throw of 30-feet4.5-inches.

Special To The Delaware State News/Gary EmeighOverall, Lake Forest girls finished seventh of 17 schools, with 36 points. The girls’ meet was won by Kent Island, Md., with 72 points. Schools from Maryland, Delaware and Virginia attend the meets at Worcester County Recreation Center, the only indoor track and field venue in the region.
Among the girls’ teams, other Delaware schools’ finishes were: Smyrna, fifth, 40.5; Cape Henlopen, sixth, 39; and Sussex Tech, 17th, 4. Among the boys, Parkside won with 86.5 points. Delaware schools were: Cape Henlopen, seconnd, 83; Lake Forest, fifth, 36.5; Sussex Tech, seventh, 29; and Smyrna, 10th, 22. Meets are held at Snow Hill every Wednesday, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
College bowling
Hornets rise in national poll: The Delaware State bowling team has climbed to No. 6 in the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 poll released this week, up six spots from its preseason ranking and tops among Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference teams.

Special To The Delaware State News/Gary EmeighThis is Delaware State’s highest ranking since holding the No. 3 spot in the February 2010 poll, the best in team history. That season, DSU won its second straight MEAC championship and competed in the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row.
The Hornets are 39-14 overall and 14-2 in the MEAC Northern Division this season.
College equestrian
DSU’s Adams honored: The United Equestrian Conference has cited Delaware State’s Cheyenne Adams for her performances during the month of November.
Adams has been selected as the UEC Horsemanship Rider of the Month after two winning performances for the Hornets. The appearances were the first two National Collegiate Equestrian Association horsemanship competitions of her career.
In her victories over riders from nationally-ranked Fresno State and No. 1 Georgia, Adams posted an average score of 73.7 and earned Most Outstanding Performer honors in each.
Adams is the second DSU rider to earn United Equestrian Conference monthly honors this season, joining Hayley Anderson who was selected as the league’s Equitation on the Flat Rider of the Month for October.
