St. Georges High took a 14-point lead into the fourth quarter before downing Milford, 67-59, in boys’ basketball on Thursday evening.
The loss was the first of the season for the Buccaneers (4-1) while the Hawks improved to 5-0.
Jayden Norman tallied 17 points for Milford with Neysen Legros adding 15.
Aaron Rambert scored a game-high 26 points for St. Georges while Blair Thomas scored 19. The two players combined to make seven three-pointers.
Appoquinimink 61, Caesar Rodney 55: The Jaguars improved to 5-0 with the victory.
The Riders dropped to 0-5. It was their third loss by six points or less.
Malachi Brinkley had 17 points, Steven Smith had 16 and Khalil Kemp added 10 for CR. The three players combined to score all 20 of the Riders’ fourth-quarter points with Smith hitting three three-pointers and netting 11 points in the final period.
Eric Mathenge, a 6-foot-5 junior, tallied a game-high 18 points for Appo, which led 36-26 at halftime.
CR next plays on Monday at the Governor’s Challenge in Salisbury, Md. The Riders open with a 5 p.m. against Parkside in the Wicomico Civic Center.
Miles White bnetted 21 points with Dominique Wyatt adding 17 in the Buccaneers’ win on Thursday.
Caravel led 38-15 by halftime against the Eagles, who dropped to 0-4.
Girls’ basketball
Cape Henlopen 43, Red Lion 26: The Vikings out-scored Red Lion, 16-1, in the third quarter to break open the non-conference contest.
Cape Henlopen improved to 4-2 after posting its fourth straight win. Amalia Frutchman (16 points, 10 rebounds) had a double-double for the Vikings while Faith Re adding 15 points on five three-pointers.
Hayden Hudson collected 10 rebounds, four blocks and three steals.
The Vikings next host West Catholic, Pa. on Monday at 6 p.m. in the first round of the Slam to the Beach tournament.
Wrestling
IR wins pair of matches: Indian River picked up two Henlopen South matches on Wednesday, beating Seaford 70-12 and Sussex Academy 78-0 in a tri-match.
The Indians recorded a total of 15 pins in the two matches. Richard Wiggins had a 22-second fall for IR.
College basketball
WOMEN, Drexel 62, Delaware State 44: The Hornets dropped the non-conference road decision on Wednesday.
Delaware State (2-8) was paced by Savannah Brooks and Tyshonne Tollie, who finished with 12 points each. Brooks, who recorded her fifth-straight game with double-digit points, added three rebounds and three assists.
Jessica Martino hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds and chipped in with three points, one steal and one assist.
Delaware State doesn’t play again until Dec. 30 when it hosts Fairleigh Dickinson. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Zulueta honored by MEAC: Delaware State freshman guard Naomi Zulueta was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the week.
In a game against Hofstra, she recorded game-highs in both rebounds (12) and steals (5). On the offensive side, Zulueta finished one point shy of a double-double with nine points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field.
College football
More honors for UD pair: Delaware football’s Johnny Buchanan and Kedrick Whitehead continue to rake in the postseason accolades as they each earned two more All-America selections.
Buchanan was named to the Phil Steele FCS All-American first team as well as the AFCA All-American second team, while Whitehead earned third-team honors (Phil Steele) and first-team accolades (AFCA).
