Local roundup: Lower Sussex wins 8-10 softball state title

Lower Sussex scored the last three runs of the game to post a 6-3 victory over Smyrna-Clayton to win the state title in 8-10 softball on Friday night.

The District III champions went 3-1 in the tournament to earn a spot in the East Regional, which starts on July 25 in Jenkins Township, Pa..

Smyrna-Clayton, which won on Thursday to force a second title game, finished 2-2 in the tourney.

Baseball

8-10 tournament

M.O.T. 9, Milford 3: M.O.T. reached the District finals with the win on Friday night.

M.O.T. (4-1), which has won three straight games in the losers’ bracket, will take on Camden-Wyoming (3-0) today at 7 p.m. at Dover in the title game. M.O.T. needs a victory to force a second game for the title on Sunday evening.

The district champion advances to the state tournament which starts on Tuesday at Milton.

The M.O.T.-Milford contest was postponed twice by rain over the last two days. It resumed with Milford leading 2-0.

Braden Alexander had three hits, including a double, for M.O.T. while Connor Fitzgerald, Ephram Starkey and Hunter Skelton all had a pair of hits. Pitcher Tyler Jones had six strikeouts.

For Milford, pitcher Mason Mills struck out six and added two hits at the plate. Mason Farisser (1 RBI), Trent Lovett (1 RBI), Brody Skinner and Ryan Farisser all had hits.

Tennis

Brengle in semis of 60K ITF tourney: Madison Brengle advanced to the semifinals of the Berkeley Tennis Club Challenge with a victory over Gail Brodsky on Friday afternoon.

Brengle defeated Brodsky, 6-0, 6-4, in just 55 minutes. The 29-year-old Dover native will face Kristie Ahn in the semifinals this afternoon at a time to be determined.

Brengle is the tournament’s top seed. She downed Connie Ma 6-3, 6-1 in the first round on Wednesday before defeating Alycia Parks in the second round, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, on Thursday.
