Kylee Hill pitched the shutout as fourth-seeded Laurel High blanked No. 5 Smyrna, 8-0, in the DIAA softball state quarterfinals on Tuesday afternoon.

The victory sends the Bulldogs (18-4) to Thursday’s state semifinals, where they will face top-seeded Sussex Central. The Golden Knights downed Laurel, 10-0, on March 29.

Couri Smith went 4-for-4 and scored four runs while Ashlyn Ullman (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 1 run) and MacKenzie Whaley (2-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 run) also paced Laurel’s 11-hit attack. Hill scattered eight hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

The victory was the Bulldogs’ third over the Eagles this season.

Smyrna (14-8), which won the last two state titles, had a 10-game state tournament winning streak snapped.

Sussex Central 6, Appoquinimink 1: Madge Layfield pitched a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts as the No. 1 Golden Knights moved on to Thursday’s state semifinals.

Kaylee Verosko (3-for-3) and Kate Evick both homered for Central, which finished with 14 hits. The Knights were leading 2-1 when they put up four runs in the fourth.

Central (20-1) has won 20 straight games since a season-opening loss to Smyrna.

Delaware Military 2, Caesar Rodney 0: Graceyn Frost fired a one-hitter and struck out 13 as the No. 2 Seahawks advanced to Thursday’s state semifinals.

It was Frost’s 17th shutout of the season. In three state tournament games — all against Henlopen Conference teams — she has allowed no runs, one hit and struck out 48.

Sydney Hatch had the lone hit for the Riders (17-4) on Tuesday while Peyton Shields threw a four-hitter.

DMA (18-2) will take on Caravel in Thursday’s other semifinal.

Baseball

Appoquinimink 5, Sussex Tech 4: The 10th-seeded Jaguars scored all five of their runs in the top of the first before edging the No. 2 Ravens in the DIAA state quarterfinals.

Sussex Tech closed within 5-4 by scoring a pair of runs in the fourth. But Appo reliever Chase Fleming allowed only three hits over the final three innings to earn the save.

Connor Ellingsworth and Malikye Wells had two hits apiece for Sussex Tech.

The Jaguars face No. 3 St. Mark’s in the state semifinals on Thursday at Frawley Stadium.

St. Mark’s 7, Smyrna 0: Jack Burns tossed a four-hitter and struck out six as the third-seeded Spartans topped the No. 22 Eagles in the state quarterfinals.

St. Mark’s, which beat the Eagles 2-1 in 10 innings earlier in the season, led only 1-0 before scoring six runs in the fourth.

Logan Unterreiner had a double for Smyrna (12-10), which saw a five-game winning streak snapped.

Girls’ lacrosse

Cape Henlopen 15, Ursuline 5: The second-seeded Vikings built a 10-0 halftime lead before notching the state semifinal victory.

Cape Henlopen (16-1) will play for the program’s 12th-straight state championship when it faces top-seeded Tatnall (18-0) in the finals on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Dover High.

Emily Monigle netted four goals for the Vikings on Tuesday while Haley Craig (1 assist), Ella Rishko, Louise Rishko and Carrie Clausius all scored twice. Destiny Kusen made seven saves for Cape, which out-shot the third-seeded Raiders, 20-12.

The Vikings beat Ursuline by only one goal during the regular season.

Tennis

Dover girls advance all five: Dover advanced all five entries while Caesar Rodney has four left going into today’s semifinal round of the DIAA tennis state tournament.

The girls’ tourney continues at 2:30 p.m. with matches at St. Andrews School in Middletown. The boys’ semifinals are at Odessa and Appoquinimink. Play start at 2:30 p.m.

The Senators didn’t lose a set on Tuesday as Erika Synoski (first singles), Olivia Anyanwu (second singles), Evie Snyder (third singles), Shing Lin-Terri Crawford (first doubles) and Anna Canaliohio-Malini Lodharia all moved on.

Advancing for the Riders were Samantha Manjon (first singles), Erin Gross (second singles), Carrie Lord (third singles) and Allyson Lebening-Natalie Rider.

The tournament is slated to conclude on Thursday afternoon at St. Andrews.
