Local roundup: Laurel pins Lake Forest for South title; Blue Hens' Dickey nets 52

Four of Laurel High’s eight individual wins came by pin as the Bulldogs topped Lake Forest, 36-27, on Friday night to capture the Henlopen South wrestling title.

The South crown was Laurel’s second since 2018 and the program’s fourth overall. Both squads were unbeaten in the division coming into the match.

This is the last weekend of the regular season in wrestling.

Brennan Harrington (106 pounds) had a 37-second fall for the Bulldogs with Stanley Pete (120) adding a 57-second pin two matches later. James Johnson (195) later posted a pin in 39 seconds while Matt Pusey (285) registered a fall in 55 seconds.

Case Dempsey (126), Nurrideen Ahmad-Statts (152) and Cole Dempsey (160) all pins for defending South champion Lake Forest.

Salesianum 34, Caesar Rodney 30: The Sals scored the match's final nine points on a pin and 9-7 decision to rally past the Riders.

The match went back and forth with the Riders taking a 30-25 advantage on a major decision by Cameron Calaldi (138) with two matches left. CR got pins from Alexander McEvoy (106) and Marlon Smith (132).

Sussex Tech 66, Dover 12: Joseph Gappa (160), Harold Baker (138) and David DiCampli (182) all had pins in under 50 seconds to lead the Ravens.

Ryan Cooper (145) also won by fall for Sussex Tech.

For the Senators, Joe Jackson (120) and Conner Ridgeway (220) both had pins.

Woodbridge 54, Sussex Academy 30: The Blue Raiders picked up eight pins in the victory.

Winning by fall for Woodbridge were Parker Short (113), Patrick Luberisse (120), Cooper Andrews (138), Qualier Morales (145), Jaisac Gonzalez (152), Nickolas Akers (160), Terrance Felipa (170) and Khelei Tillman (220).

The Seahawks received pins from Owen Mattioni (126), Patrick Donahue (182), Gerald Windish (195) and Dawson Weems (285).

Sussex Tech 45, Seaford 36: David Kristunas (113), Hobe Givens (132), Joesph Kane (170) and David DiCampli (182) all won by fall in the Ravens’ second win of the evening.

Sean Martinez (152) posted a 56-second pin for the Blue Jays with Coleman Willey (145), Zachary Holmes (160) and Sa`muary Long (285) also winning by fall.

Sussex Academy 66, St. Andrews 18: Gabriel Hill (138) had the lone pin for the Seahawks in the non-conference win.

Girls’ basketball

Dover 58, Sussex Central 24: Heaven Robinson netted 14 points and Sara Benson added 12 as the Senators won their third game in a row.

Cape Henlopen 76, Smyrna 26: The Vikings tallied 31 points in the third quarter of the Henlopen North win.

Cape Henlopen honored its season class, which owns a four-year record of 65-12, including a 50-2 mark in the Henlopen North.

Senior Mahkia Applewhite collected 33 points, 12 steals and six assists for the Vikings while Julia Saleur (14 points) and Morgan Mahoney (13) also paced Cape.

Lake Forest 67, Laurel 31: The Spartans improved to 9-0 in the Henlopen South with the victory.

Gabrielle Almonte netted 24 points with Karly Cain (15), Breanna Johnson (15) and Kadija Bundu (11) also scoring in double figures for Lake.

The Bulldogs got 14 points from Carlie Venables.

Delmarva Christian 57, Sts. Peter & Paul School 40: The Royals improved to 11-3 after posting the win.

Boys’ basketball

Dover 71, Sussex Central 30: The Senators out-scored the Golden Knights, 37-17, in the second half to close out the North victory.

Laurel 84, Arcadia 42: Javier White netted 16 points with Kylse Wilson and Tyronn Kane both adding 12 for the Bulldogs.

St. Georges 65, Caesar Rodney 60: The Riders fell behind 22-8 in the first quarter before falling to the Hawks on Thursday.

Messiah Antwi collected 21 points, 21 rebounds and five blocks for CR with Craig Williams (12) and Trey Voshell (10) also scoring in double digits.

College basketball

WOMEN, Delaware 103, Charleston 79: Senior Jamine Dickey poured in 52 points, two shy of the school record, while the Blue Hens missed the UD record for points in a game by just one in the CAA victory.

The only time a Delaware player scored more points in a game was when Elena Delle Donne tallied 54 in a game against James Madison in 2010. Dickey shot 18-of-33 from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, and 13-of-14 from the foul line in 38 minutes.

Dickey also had 18 rebounds and four assists in the contest for Delaware (8-1 CAA, 14-5 overall).
