Laurel High edged Indian River High 14-13 in overtime to capture the Class 1A, District II title on Friday night.
The Bulldogs blocked an extra point in overtime to clinch the victory. Laurel improved to 7-1 overall and remained unbeaten against Class 1A opposition.
Indian River fell to 4-4 overall.
Delmar 36, Lake Forest 12: Jaylin Warner recorded three touchdowns in the first half, including a 56-yard rush as time expired, to pace the Wildcats in the Class 2A, District III matchup.
The Wildcats moved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in district.
Woodbridge 35, Red Lion 6: Jordan Evens scored two touchdowns, one of which was a 91-yard kickoff return, to lead the Blue Raiders to a Class 2A, District III victory.
Woodbridge remained unbeaten at 9-0 overall and clinched the District III championship.
Middletown 49, Sussex Central 7: The Golden Knights fell in the rematch of last year’s state title game on Friday night.
St. Elizabeth 53, Polytech 14: The Panthers dropped to 3-6 on the season.
Caravel 44, Milford 0: The Buccaneers were shut out on the road Friday night and fell to 3-5 overall.
Boys’ soccer
CR top seed in state tourney: Unbeaten Caesar Rodney is the top seed in the DIAA Division I boys’ soccer state tournament brackets that was determined Friday.
Six Henlopen Conference squads are in the fields for both the Division I and II tournaments. Indian River is seeded No. 3 in Division II.
The Division I tourney starts on Wednesday, Nov. 10 with four quarterfinal matchups.
In games involving downstate squads, No. 1 CR (14-0-1) will host No. 8 Cape Henlopen (9-5-1) while No. 4 Sussex Central (11-2-1) hosts No. 5 St. Georges (11-3-1). Both contests start at 6 p.m.
Salesianum (11-4), which has won 16 of 19 state crowns since 2002, is the third seed.
In the Division II bracket, two Henlopen Conference teams will play in the quarterfinals on Nov. 9. No. 10 Sussex Academy (7-7) faces No. 7 Archmere (10-5) at Abessinio Stadium while No. 11 Delmar (9-6) plays No. 6 McKean (10-3) at A.I. DuPont. Both contests begin at 6 p.m.
In the semifinals, on Nov. 13, No. 3 Indian River (10-2-1) will host the winner of the Delmar/McKean matchup at 5 p.m.
Caesar Rodney and Indian River will square off in the Henlopen Conference championship game on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Sussex Academy.
Field hockey
Delmar, Cape top DIAA brackets: As has become tradition, Cape Henlopen and Delmar High are the top seeds in the DIAA Division and Division II field hockey state tournament brackets that were announced today.
Five Henlopen Conference squads are among the eight-team field in Division I while three downstate programs are in the 12-team Division II bracket.
The Division I tourney opens with four matchups on Nov. 11, all starting at 2 p.m. In games involving Henlopen Conference teams, No. 8 Dover (8-6-1) goes to top-seeded Cape Henlopen (14-1); No. 5 Polytech (8-6-1) plays at No. 4 Sussex Tech (10-5); and No. 3 Smyrna (12-3) hosts No. 6 Appoquinimink (10-5).
The semifinals are slated for the evening of Nov. 16 at DE Turf Complex with the Division I state finals at Dover on Nov. 20 at 11:30 a.m.
In Division II, which opens on Nov. 9, No. 7 Lake Forest (10-5) hosts No. 10 St. Mark’s (9-6-1) at 2 p.m. In the semifinals, on Nov. 13, Delmar (15-0) plays at Cape Henlopen at 11 a.m. against either Caravel or Concord while No. 4 Sussex Academy (12-3) hosts either DMA or Tatnall at 11 a.m.
The Division II semifinals will be played on Nov. 17 at DE Turf with the title game set for Nov. 20 at 3 p.m. at Dover.
Delmar has won five straight state championships, including the last four in Division II. Cape Henlopen as captured four Division I crowns in a row and nine of 10 overall.
The Wildcats and Vikings play for the Henlopen Conference championship on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Sussex Academy.
College field hockey
Delaware 3, William & Mary 1: The Blue Hens advance to its ninth straight CAA Championship game with the semifinal victory.
Morgan Rigual netted two goals while Ashley Iannuzzi added an insurance goal.
Delaware will host James Madison at 1 p.m. for the CAA Championship Sunday. The Hens on the hunt for their third-straight CAA title, and eighth in nine season.
College volleyball
Delaware State 3, Morgan State 0: The Hornets finished their 2021 home schedule with a 13-0 record with its 3 MEAC victory over Morgan State. Set scores were 25-19, 25-17 and 25-15.
The Hornets blanked the Bears for the second time this season to improve to 22-3 overall and 10-2 in the MEAC.
Delaware State won 39 of 40 sets in its home matches this season.
The Hornets also posted their school-record 19th shutout this season and moved to within one victory of tying the team record for wins in a season. The 1987 squad posted an overall record of 23-6.
Alondra Maldonado led the Hornets with 10 kills, while Mayah Ngundam, playing her final match in Memorial Hall, tallied nine winners without an error on 11 attacks (.818).
