Local roundup: Laurel boys finish strong in South win over Spartans

Laurel High downed Lake Forest, 63-57, in Henlopen South boys’ basketball on Thursday night.

The victory was the fourth in a row for the Bulldogs, who are now 7-2 in the South, 10-3 overall.

Kylse Wilson (16 points), Javier White (12) and Terez Dickerson (10) all finished in double figures for Laurel, which out-scored Lake Forest, 24-18, in the fourth quarter to break a 39-39 tie.

Jackson Starkey, who went 11-of-14 from the foul line, scored a game-high 28 points for the Spartans.

Caesar Rodney 55, Sussex Central 33: Messiah Antwi collected 15 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks to pace the Riders to the Henlopen North win.

Craig Williams added 10 points for CR, which led 13-1 after the first quarter.
Clarence McBride-Allen tallied 11 points to lead the Golden Knights.

Smyrna 77, Sussex Tech 57: The Eagles jumped out to a 24-5 first-quarter advantage before registering the Henlopen North victory.

Smyrna put four players in double figures: Majesti Carter (16), Devin DeMoe (15), Elisha Gregory (14) and Kevin Woodruff (12).

Donald Saintphard (19), Jamaal Jones (15) and Jameel Watson (10) all led the Ravens.

Polytech 67, Cape Henlopen 42: The Panthers trailed by one before out-scoring the Vikings, 27-10 in the second quarter of the North victory.

Kyle Gamber tallied 22 points for Polytech while Xavier Brewington (17) and Jalen Anderson (11) also reached double figures.

Woodbridge 85, Early College 51: The Blue Raiders netted 28 first-quarter points in the Henlopen South victory.

Emanuel McCrea-Mosley poured in 33 points after hitting three three-pointers and going 8-for-10 from the foul line. Kenny Newton, who added four threes, scored 28 points with Bruce Mosley adding 10.

The Hornets got 23 points from Winston Arrington and 10 from Jayden Dukes.

Indian River 63, Sussex Academy 30: The Indians jumped out to a 16-4 first-quarter lead in the Henlopen South victory.

Seaford 77, Delmar 45: The Blue Jays rolled to the win in the Henlopen South matchup.

Girls’ basketball

Lake Forest 73, Laurel 58: The Spartans took control of the Henlopen South contest from the start by out-scoring the Bulldogs, 25-8, in the first quarter.

Laurel’s Carlie Venables netted 31 points after sinking nine three-pointers. Amilleona Palmer added 13.

Cape Henlopen 60, Polytech 23: The Vikings started the game on 21-2 run before picking up the Henlopen North victory.

Meghan Mahoney (18 points), Mehkia Applewhite (16) and Julia Saleur (12) all scored in double figures for Cape.

The Panthers got 10 points from Hallie Hopkins.

Woodbridge 56, Early College 18: Reghan Robinson hit four threes and finished with 17 points while Shanyla Gibbs added 10 to pace the Blue Raiders.

Seaford 69, Delmar 35: Amira Tingle (17 rebounds, nine steals, five assists) scored 28 points with Kimrya Cornish Baines adding 25 in the Blue Jays’ South win.

Red Lion Christian 55, Milford 21: Red Lion opened up a 31-5 first-lead in the non-conference win.

College bowling

DSU ranked No. 14 in poll: The Delaware State bowling team remained in the No. 14 slot in the latest national poll as released by the National Tenpin Coaches Association.

The Hornets return to action this weekend when they compete in the James Brown Invitational hosted by Morgan State.
