Local roundup: Lake Forest girls top Dover; Smyrna pins Sussex Central

Lake Forest High pulled away in the second half to post a 45-29 victory over Dover in girls’ basketball on Friday afternoon.

The Spartans are now 8-2 after winning for the third time in their last four games. They won six games all last season.

Lake Forest led 22-15 by halftime before out-scoring the Senators, 23-14, over the last two quarters. Dover dropped to 7-4 overall.

Caesar Rodney 45, Padua 37: The Riders jumped out to a 17-2 first-quarter advantage before holding off the Pandas on Thursday night.

Stacey Deputy had 17 points and Nubia Estwick added 10 for CR, which out-scored Padua, 15-9, in the fourth quarter to close out the victory.

Sussex Tech 55, Indian River 18: The Ravens out-scored the Indians, 40-12, in the second half to close out the win on Thursday night.

Delmar 29, Salisbury School 19: The Wildcats registered their second win in a row to improve to 5-6.

Wrestling

Smyrna 40, Sussex Central 28: Kael Howell (220 pounds) and Chijioke Eule (285) posted back-to-back pins as the Eagles registered the key Henlopen North victory on Friday afternoon.

Smyrna also won five straight individual matches between 120 and 145 pounds to down the Golden Knights, who were coming off an upset of Cape Henlopen on Wednesday.

Gabe Giampietro (120) had a 58-second fall for the Eagles, who also got a pin from Tyree Heath (145) and Brandon West (160).

For Central, Caden Cope (152) and Josh Negron (195) both won by fall.

Cape Henlopen 82, Dover 0: Joshua Wright (126), Braydon Cole (138), Andrew Schaen (145), C.J. Fritchman (160) and Maxim Meadows (113) all won by pin in the Vikings’ Henlopen North win.

Caravel 51, Caesar Rodney 15: The Buccaneers won 11 of the 14 bouts in the victory on Thursday.

Cody Waski (145) and Josh Dyer (220) had pins for the Riders.

Boys’ basketball

Laurel 51, Sussex Central 44: Javier White tallied 16 points with Nifere Griffin adding 14 in the Bulldogs’ victory on Thursday.

Laurel also got 10 points from Tyronn Kane in a contest it stared with a 21-8 run.
The Golden Knights were paced by David Maker’s 10 points.

Basketball

Allen hits nine threes: Dover High grad Jordan Allen sank nine three-pointers in a game for the G League Westchester Knicks last week.

Allen finished with 27 points and went 9-for-15 from beyond the arc in the Knicks’ 126-99 win over the Maine Celtics. In nine games, with five starts, Allen is averaging 14.2 ppg in his first month with the Knicks.

Local sports

DSBA holding banquet: The Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association will honor Delaware’s Athlete of the Year and other leaders in Delaware sports at its annual banquet, to be held at a noon luncheon on Feb. 21 at DuPont Country Club.

In addition to the John J. Brady Award to Delaware’s Outstanding Athlete of 2021, which will be announced that day, the banquet will honor the state’s Team of the Year, and the winners of the Tubby Raymond Coach of the Year Award, the Herm Reitzes Award for Public Service and the Buddy Hurlock Unsung Hero Award.

Tickets may be procured at http://www.delasports.org/ for $38 each, with a table of eight available for $290.

College equestrian

Hornets drop opener: The Delaware State equestrian team, ranked seventh in the latest national poll, opened its spring schedule with a 14-5 loss to Texas Christian on Thursday.

The Horned Frogs were 8-2 winners in the Western competition and posted a 6-3 victory in the jumping seat rides. The highlight for Delaware State was a 3-2 win on the Flat.

DSU’s Gabrielle Fournier topped all Flat riders with a score of 85, while Victoria Croston and Mirey Kurkculog also collected points on the Flat for the Hornets with identical scores of 75.5.

On the Western side, Anelia Cortina earned a point for Delaware State in Horsemanship with a score of 76.

Grace Wilson posted a score of 70.5 for the Hornets’ lone point in the Reining competition.
