Local roundup: Lake Forest blanks St. Mark’s in hockey tourney

Seventh-seeded Lake Forest High blanked No. 10 St. Mark’s, 3-0, in the first round of the DIAA Division II field hockey state tournament on Tuesday afternoon.

The victory sends the Spartans (11-5) to Saturday’s quarterfinals, where they will play an 11 a.m. contest at second-seeded Archmere (12-3).

Roxanne Troutman scored twice for Lake Forest with Mya Jester scoring the other goal. Sierra Jester had two assists.

Three of the four quarterfinal matchups will include Henlopen Conference programs. Also on Saturday at 11 a.m., top-seeded Delmar (16-0) will play No. 9 Caravel (9-4-3) at Cape Henlopen while fourth-seeded Sussex Academy (12-3) will host No. 5 Tatnall (13-3).

Football

Laurel-Delmar game on Thursday: Originally scheduled for Friday, Laurel High’s football game at Delmar will now be played on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

This is the last weekend of the high school regular season in Delaware. The DIAA state tournament brackets in the three new classes are slated to be determined on Sunday.

Boys’ soccer

Archmere 1, Sussex Academy 0, OT: The seventh-seeded Auks scored in the second overtime to edge the No. 10 Seahawks in the first round of the DIAA Division II state tourney.

Senior goalie Tyler Hudson made five saves for Sussex Academy, which finishes the season with a record of 8-8. Both teams took six shots while Archmere (11-5) held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

College basketball

WOMEN, Delaware 87, Chestnut Hill 48: Jasmine Dickey finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds in the Blue Hens’ season-opening win.

Tyi Skinner added 18 points while Tara Cousins had 15 for Delaware, which out-scored Chestnut Hill 27-11 in the third quarter.

Stony Brook 87, Delaware State 46: The Hornets fell behind by 27 at halftime before dropping their season opener.

DelState, which was making its debut under new coach E.C. Hill, shot only 31.5 percent (17-for-54) for the game, including just 2-of-15 from three-point range. The Hornets never led in the contest.

Sianny Sanchez-Oliver came off the bench to net a team-high 13 points for DSU while Alexis Morgane and Unique Miller had 11 apiece.

College golf

Hen women place third: The Delaware women’s golf team concluded its fall season by tying for third place at the Mercer Invitational.

The Blue Hens fired a 299 score during Tuesday’s final round to tie for third place out of 11 squads with a 902 total. UD freshman Alisa Khokhlova carded an even par 72 during her third round on the 6,171-yard Brickyard Golf Course, tying for eighth place with a six over par 73-77-72=222.

College swimming

UD’s Selling honored: Delaware junior Mira Selling was named CAA Co-Swimmer of the Week after taking first place and setting pool records in three events during last week’s CAA pod meet with JMU, UNCW and William & Mary.

Selling finished first in the 200 IM with a pool-record time of 2:03.92 that was the fastest in the league. She set another pool record with a first-place effort in the 200 free (1:49.88), which is the CAA’s fastest by nearly three seconds.

Selling capped her weekend by winning the 200 fly by more than two seconds with a pool-record and CAA-best time of 2:02.39.
