Luke Johnson struck out 11 and hit a home run to lead Cape Henlopen High to a 3-2 victory over Milford High in the second round of the DIAA state baseball tournament on Saturday.
The No. 12 Vikings advanced to play fourth-seeded Dover in the second round on Tuesday. The same two teams met last year in the semifinals with Cape Henlopen winning in 10 innings.
Mason Fluharty and Ryan Gibbons each had two hits for the Vikings. Luke Smailer added a RBI double.
Milford was led by Brock Hilligoss, who drove in a run and had a pair of hits.
Appoquinimink 9, Delmar 1: The Wildcats fell in the second round as the Jaguars scored seven runs in the first two innings.
Dylan Pasta provided a RBI double for Delmar.
Sussex Tech 5, Concord 4: The eighth-seeded Ravens scored a pair of runs in the sixth to advance to the quarterfinals.
Wilmington Friends 18, Delmarva Christian 1: The Royals dropped the second round contest in five innings.
Michael Briggs and Andrew Workman each had a bit for Delmarva Christian.
Boys lacrosse
Cape Henlopen 16, Delaware Military 2: The Vikings earned the quarterfinal victory on Saturday night.
Gabriel Best netted six goals to lead Cape Henlopen. Jack Dennis added a hat trick.
Cape Henlopen, the top seed in the state tournament, will play Archmere in the semifinals on Wednesday.
College track and field
Two Wolverines earn All-American status: Wesley’s Thomas Kalieta and Kai Cole each earned All-American honors Saturday.
Kalieta was fourth in the 400 with a time of 46.87. Cole was eighth in the 100 finals with a time of 10.55.
UD’s McFolling-Young’s season concludes at NCAA prelims: Marissa McFolling-Young, a Smyrna High product, moved up four spots from her entry place for Delaware in the discus throw at the NCAA East prelims on Friday.
She finished in 43rd with a throw of 145-4.
Dover grad fifth at NJCAA: Tayshaun Chisholm, a Dover High product, placed fifth in the 110 Hurdle at the NJCAA Division 1 National Championships in Hobbs, New Mexico.
Chisholm broke the 14-second barrier for the first time in his career with a time of 13.92 seconds, a clocking that would have placed him second in the ACC Championships this year. He also was recognized as the Atlantic Region Track Athlete of the Year prior to the meet.
Polytech grad wins two SoCon titles: Amber Lust, a Polytech grad, won the 110 hurdles and heptathlon last month.
Lust set a school record in the heptathlon with 5,005 points. She also lowered her school record in the hurdles with a time of 13.68.
