Local roundup: Indian River boys rally past Lake Forest

Indian River High rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to top Lake Forest, 46-42, in the opening round of the DIAA boys’ basketball state tournament on Tuesday night.

The win sends the Indians (16-5) to a second-round game at third-seeded Howard (14-5) on Thurday at 7 p.m.

Brendon Braford tallied 19 points for IR, which won two of three meetings with Lake Forest this season.

Jackson Starkey had 15 points for the Spartans while Calif Spencer added 11. Lake Forest made only 8-of-21 foul shots while the Indians were 4-for-11.

Laurel  71, Woodbridge 48: The No. 11 Bulldogs rolled past the No. 22 Blue Raiders in their first-round tourney contest.

Laurel (16-5) will play at No. 6 Appoquinimink on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Caravel 82, Cape Henlopen 48: The No. 9 Buccaneers ousted the No. 24 Vikings in Tuesday's opening round of the state tournament.

Caravel (15-6) earned a second-round game at No. 8 Sanford on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Girls’ basketball

Cape game moved to Sussex Tech: Cape Henlopen’s second-round game in the DIAA girls’ basketball state tournament on Friday will be played at Sussex Tech.

Cape’s gym is being used to host the two-day DIAA individual wrestling tournament. The third-seeded Vikings (19-2) will host the winner of Wednesday’s first-round matchup between St. Mark’s and Dover.

College baseball
Maryland 8, Delaware 3: Six runs in the first four innings against starter Wyatt Nelson proved to be too much of a deficit to overcome for Delaware (3-5) as it fell at No. 18 Maryland (4-4) 8-3 on Tuesday.

Elijah Lambros’ two-run shot in the fourth made it a six-run deficit for the visitors.

Relievers Owen Margolis and Anthony Gubitosi each fired a scoreless inning, with Gubitosi striking out three of the four batters he faced in the eighth. Owen Petrich was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, driving in a run.

Hens’ Loynd earns CAA award: Delaware third baseman Joey Loynd was named CAA Player of the Week.

Loynd batted .526 (10-for-19) with a home run and 14 RBI. He went 5-for-6 against UMBC on Feb. 21, and became the first Delaware player in at least five seasons to record back-to-back five-RBI efforts.

In an 8-6 win at Stetson, Loynd drove in four of Delaware’s eight runs, including his first home run of the season and a go-ahead two-run single in the 10th inning. He scored eight runs during the week and recorded four doubles as the Blue Hens went 3-1.

UMBC 13, Delaware State 1: Alec Rodriguez (Dover) recorded a multi-hit performance while Jancarlos Colon drove in the Hornets’ only run on an RBI-single in the top of the sixth in the setback.

College lacrosse

UD men stay in Top 20: The Delaware men’s lacrosse team remained in the national polls after falling to Villanova, 13-12, on Sunday.

The Blue Hens (3-1) were ranked No. 17 in USA Lacrosse Magazine poll, and No. 19 in the USILA and Inside Lacrosse polls, the organizations announced on Monday.

Delaware hosts Michigan on Saturday at noon at Delaware Stadium. It is the third of five straight home games for the Blue Hens.
