Dover High grad Jordan Hutchins and Joey Loynd each homered as the Delaware baseball team rallied for a 6-3 win over No. 24 Maryland on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Delaware (7-7), which topped fourth-ranked Notre Dame, 5-4, on Feb. 20, scored the game’s final six runs after giving up three in the third. The victory avenged a 14-4 loss to the Terrapins (14-4) on March 1.

The Blue Hen relief trio of Wyatt Nelson, Luke Pizzico and Mike Biasiello shut down the Terps over the final seven innings.

“This was another fun win against a Top 25 team,” said Delaware coach Jim Sherman. “Just like against Notre Dame, we got good pitching. You couldn’t ask for more of Nelson, Pizzico and Biasiello.”

Sherman added about Hutchins: “Hutch played his best game of the year.”

Hutchins finished with two hits and a pair of RBI.

Caravel grad Kevin Keister drove in a run for Maryland on a sac fly.

The Terps loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but Biasiello struck out pinch hitter Ian Petrutz on three pitches to earn his second save of the year.

College basketball

Hens’ Painter honored: Delaware second-team forward Dylan Painter was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches second team All-District 10 on Tuesday.

Painter, who was selected to the first team last year, becomes the fourth Blue Hen in program history to earn multiple NABC honors.

Painter leads the Blue Hens and ranks ninth in the CAA with 6.6 rebounds per game. He is also second on the team with an 11.9-point scoring average and is third with a 55.1 field goal percentage.

Painter’s five 20-point efforts are tied for the team lead, while he tied his career-high with 23 points to go with 12 rebounds in the home win over Elon. He also added 22 points at UNCW and 21 at Temple.
