Local roundup: Hornets rally but fall to La Salle 7-4 in baseball

Delaware State rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning before falling short to La Salle, 7-4, in baseball on Wednesday afternoon.

The Hornets (5-7) were trailing 6-0 when they put together their four-run outburst. DelState sent eight batters to the plate in the inning, getting RBI from Jared Gillis (Smyrna), Todd Henry and Alex Vasquez.

The Explorers added an insurance run in the top of the eighth.

Both teams finished with nine hits. Adrian Hill (Polytech), John Weglarz and Tripp Kimmell (Milford) all had two hits apiece for the Hornets.

DelState reliever Sean Bradley pitched three shutout innings while allowing only two hits.

Maryland 11, Delaware 6: Seven different Blue Hens had a hit in the loss, led by Dover High grad Jordan Hutchins, who went 2-for-2 with three RBI and three walks.

Junior Jack Goan launched his first homerun of his Delaware career, while freshman Austin Colmery has now reached base safely in all six of his starts as a Blue Hen.

The Blue Hens (1-14) got solid outings from Derek Wakeley, along with freshmen Jack Dubecq and Justin Tomovich. Wakeley has now allowed just three baserunners total in his past five-plus innings.

The Blue Hens will host the Delaware Classic with Goldey Beacom and West Chester both visiting Bob Hannah Stadium this weekend.

College lacrosse

WOMEN, Delaware 16, George Mason 8: The Blue Hens posted a 10-goal second half in picking up the victory.

Delaware, which trailed by as much as five midway through the first half, rallied to score 11 unanswered goals to earn its first win on its home turf this season.

Mia DeRuggiero led the Hens (3-4) with a season-best six points on five assists and one goal to go along with a season-high three ground balls while Christine Long collected five points on four goals and an assist.

MEN, Western Connecticut State 18, Wesley 7: Zach Farnell tallied two goals in the first half and two in the fourth for a career-high four goals in the Wolverines’ loss.

Cody Loyd netted two unassisted goals in the fourth quarter for his second multi-goal game of the season.

Leo Kelly scored Wesley’s first goal two and a half minutes into the contest. Adam Tewey assisted on both of Farnell’s first-half goals. Kelly and Tyler Johnston provided the assists on Farnell’s fourth-quarter goals.

In goal, Dylan Sicca stopped 12 shots, picked up four ground balls and caused three turnovers.
